UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST NIGHTS MEETING The Upper Hutt Borough Council met last night. The Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) presided, and Councillors Cottle, Spearman, Howell, Blewman, Greig, Hood, Guthrie, and Duff were present. The Mayor welcomed Mr. S. Bish, the new town clerk, and in the course of his remarks stated that he considered that Mr. Bish would never .regret having taken up his position with the Upper Hutt borough. Mr. Bish suitably replied. A letter was received advising that the Wellington Education Board had agreed to transfer the portion of Silverstream school grounds necessary for the construction of the proposed road to connect Whiteman’s Valley Road with Gloucester Road at Silverstream. The Main Highways Board wrote suggesting that local authorities should cooperate in controlling traffic inspection. A letter was received from the city solicitor enclosing a copy of the Wellington City and Suburban Water Supply Amendment Bill, 1929. The Bill was approved, Councillor Duff dissenting. The Hutt County Council wrote offering to lease the county sanitary ground to the borough at £25 per annum. The offer was accepted. Councillor Duff was appointed to represent the council on the Hutt Valley Provisional Town Planning Committee, in addition to the Mayor, already appointed. Mr. J. H. Gruar’s solicitors wrote objecting to rubbish being deposited on his property in Mangaroa Road. Councillor Greig remarked that the council has no responsibility in the matter. It was resolved to take no action. The By-Laws Committee report was received. The Building Committee reported that it considered that the council should appoint a part-time building inspector to be paid in accordance with the work required of him. Councillor Duff stated that in his opinion it was very necessary that a competent inspector should be appointed. Councillor Greig stated that there was an existing resolution thnt a report be furnished in three months as to the advisability of appointing a building and traflie inspector. Councillor Duff moved and Councillor Hood seconded that the matter be deferred until the report was received. This was carried. Councillor Guthrie mentioned the necessity of improving the water channel on the eastern side of .Station Street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee for report. The Railway Department is to be asked to put the roadway in its portion of Station Road and Princes Street. The overseer reported that a portion of the wooden culvert in front of the Wallaceville shops had collapsed, and it was resolved that the culvert be covered with concrete and that the owner of the shops be asked to contribute Tialf the cost of the work.

The West Ward members reported on the proposal to construct a culvert to do away with the flood-water nuisance caused by the Silverstream Creek. It was resolved to submit the proposal to the district railway engineer.
