FROM FAR AND NEAR Dispute on Canopus Settled.—The puts between the cooks and the remainder of the crew on the Canopus has been settled (states a Press Association message from Christchurch). The vessel will probably sail to-day for West port. Dense Fog in Sydney,—The densest fog of the year enveloped Sydney harbour on Saturday morning (states a Press Association message). Although there were many near collisions, no mishaps have been reported. Some ferry services were suspended altogether for several hours.
Another League Footballer for England. —A Press Association message from Auckland, states that Trevor Hanlon, full-back for Richmond League Football Club, has accepted an engagement with the Broughton Rangers Club, in Manchester, England, and will sail on August 19. The engagement is for more than one season.
Prisoners Sentenced.—ln the Supreme Court at Auckland George Lee, for receiving stolen jewellery valued at £6B, was sentenced to twelve months’ fiard labour. Julius Barth, a private bailiff, for making a false statement on oath, which, if made in judicial proceedings, would have amounted to perjury, was sentenced to six months’ hard labour. Raymond Claude Tanfield, for carnal knowledge and abducting a girl aged 15, got 18 months’ hard labour. —Press Assn.
