A fair crowd lined the ground at the Basin Reserve to see Institute and Y.M.C.A. contest the local final of the Chatham Cup,. After the performances that these teams had put up in previous games, spectators looked forward to an exciting and close tussle. It was anything but an even contest. Institute only played a moderate game in the first spell, and- in the second spell lost their vigour and initiative altogether. Lucas had a few shots to save, but was in good form. Mr. E. Martin was referee. The opening stages were fairly even, until Y.M.C.A. forced a corner, which was partially cleared. Ballard returned a dropping shot just below the bar, which Mantell negotiated with difficulty, Gill heading out finally. Ward sent in a beauty just over the top. Institute then forced Y.M.C.A. back on the right wing, but MeGirr and Ward contested the advance, and when the ball did get centred, Boa slipped back and cleared the line. A quick attack by Y.M.C.A. saw McLeod receive from Rigby, and Mantell had difficulty in keeping the ball outside th? goal. Institute took a hand again, Cooley centring, and MeGirr headed to the other side, where Smith returned a splendid shot which came close to beating Lucas, who tipped round the corner of the goal. In quick succession, 'Worth, McLeod and Lack had shots which brought no result. Boe, Worth and Rigby were instrumental in the next attack, and after .Mantell had fisted out Ballard’s centre, McLeod recovered and netted on his second shot. Y.M.C.A. 1, Institute 0. For ten minutes, play went up and down, and then from a throw-in the ball came io Armitage, who put in a low fast Shot, which simply flew past Mantell into the net. Institute began to wake up, and Lucas had a couple of hot shots to handle, while Cooley put. a corner kick behind. Boe was injured just on half-time, when Y.M.C.A. led, 2 —o. Some scrappy play resulted for ten minutes on resuming, and the surprise came wiien Rigby recovered the ball on the line when it seemed impossible to reach it. He squared the ball right across the goal-mouth, and Lack, rushing up, snapped an easy shot, which hit the upright and glanced into goal. Institute failed to rally their forces, and were more on the defence. When Ballard put in a perfect centre, Rigby put on the fourth goal, giving Institute an almost impossible task to even draw level. Institute had no sting in their attack, and May failed miserably when an easy chance did come in front of Y.M.C.A.’s coal. Shortly after this Dickinson had his first real shot, which Lueas saved, and May tried to beat him for possession, nut only succeeded in sending behind. Rigby then' ran through the Institute defence, and lifted the ball across the goal-mouth for Lack to net again. In the closing stages, Institute were run off their legs. McLeod scoring twice more, making the total 7—o in favour of Y.M.C.A. They meet St. Andrew’s, Palmerston North, in the provincial final at the Basin next Saturday. HOSPITAL BEAT DIAMONDS LOSERS’ SECOND DEFEAT. Diamonds suffered their second defeat of the season at Hospital on Saturday, although it was not altogether a surprise, for the Blacks are never over-happy on the Hospital pitch. The ground was in good order. Hospital kicked off. and kept the Diamonds’ defence busy righj from the jump. Wyatt, however, was playing a good game, and he saved several good shots, including a stinger from Gibb. Diamonds broke away, and pressed the Hospital defence until White finally relieved, when Hospital once more took up the running, and Lambert netted the opening goal for the home side. On changing ends Diamonds sought to force the pace, but Hospital were equal to the pressure, and in turn made Diamonds retreat. until Marshall managed to get past Wyatt again. In a desperate sortie Diamonds managed to get through a weak spot in the home defence, and through Smith were able to reduce the lead. This was the most they were able to do, and so they had to bow to defeat by the odd goal in three. Both Diamonds’ defeats have taken place in the second round, their first loss being to Thistle. PETONE BEAT MARIST A CONVINCING VICTORY. I’etoue recorded their most decisive victory of the season at the expense of Marist, whom they defeated by !.) goals to 1 at I’etone Recreation Ground. There was a good muster of spectators, aud conditions ere ideal. Marist were unfortunate in not having Hickey in goal, his place being filled by McElligott, who played well in a strange position. Early in the first spell Cudby received an injury, which compelled him to leave the field. Marist thus carrying on with only ten men. The teams were as follow:— I’etone: MeVean. Steel. Haines, Stobbs. Campbell. Hanlon. Bnistow. Dunlop. Martin. Leslie. Craig. Marist: McElligott: Thomas. Rudolph; Wilson, Bird, Burke: Barton, M. Condon, Marshall,, Marshment, Cudby. Marist won the toss, and in the first spell I’etone had to contend with the sun. Marist commenced smartly, and Marshment scored the first goal within a few minutes. The villagers rallied, and completely overwhelmed the opposing defence. Leslie and Baistow both scoring in about ten minutes. Peton* 2. Marist 1. For handling in the penalty area Marist were penalised, but Campbell’s shot went wide. The centre-half, however, made amends seconds later, initiating n bright movement, the ball finally going to Dunlop. who netted whnt appeared to be an offside goal. Marist made many valiant

attempts at this stage, but MeVean proved very safe. From a throw-in I’etone secured, and Martin, who was right on his game, registered the last point of the spell. At half-time the score was: Petone 4, Marist 1. I’etone had matters practically all their own way after the change-over, when they added another five goals. Marshment. Barton, and Wilson executed some pleasing work, and were the mainstay of the Marist team. Additional scorers for I’etone were: Martin (3) and Leslie (2). The final score was: Petone 9, Mnrist 1.
