DRAFT TREATY
BETWEEN BRITAIN AND EGYPT GUARANTEES REGARDING SUEZ CANAL MR. MACDONALD CONSIDERS THEM ADEQUATE (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Service.) (Rec. August 2, 7.5 p.m.) London, August 2. A committee of Cabinet has concluded the draft of a Treaty between Britain and Egypt which will be submitted to a full meeting of Cabinet shortly. A report from Cairo suggests that the text may be published there at an early date. Mr. MacDonald considers that the Treaty will provide adequate safeguards for Empire interests, and he believes that Australia and New Zealand will be satisfied that it contains adequate guarantees regarding the Suez Canal. Apparently Mr. MacDonald Is surprised at Australia’s and New Zealand’s alarm regarding Suez, as he makes it clear that England is no less dependent upon the absolute safety of this trade route. Accordingly Labour never for a moment intended to bring forward any legislation which would challenge any such safety.
