NATIVE PLANT GARDEN
Sir, — A plot of reserve by the Wilton’s Bush Road has recently been planted with native shrubs and flowers. May I ask whether steps have been taken to make a plan of the plot with the position of every plant marked thereon? Some of the labels were so perfunctorily, written as to be already illegible. Others have been pulled up. Signs are not wanting that the place has been used for the old sport, common in public gardens, of “swopping the labels.” In view of well-known and clearly-defined varieties this does not matter, but with plants like koromikos, which are the subject of so much argument about the identity of individuals, it will detract from the value of the plot if the original particulars are lost.—l am. etc., OBSERVER. Wellington. July 31. [On the above letter being brought under the notice of the Director of Parks and Reserves for the Wellington City Council (Mr.' J. G. McKenzie), he explained that the labels on the native shrubs and flowers were only of a temporary character. Printfid labels were being prepared, which would give the name of each native shrub and plant, together with the district from which it came. These printed labels would be of a permanent nature.]
