SYD. GREGORY, CRICKETER Sydney, August L The death occurred suddenly this morning of Sydney Edward Gregory, the famous Australian cricketer. Gregory was celebrated as a fieldsman at coverpoint. He was 59 years of age. [Sidney E. Gregory was one of Australia’s leading batsmen over a long period of years, in all he figured in 52 Test matches against England, and in 92 innings, with seven not ones, aggregated 2193 runs, giving him an average of 25.80 per innings. His name is written large in the annuls of the fights lor the “Ashes.” He holds the record for Australia for the most runs scored for an opening wicket, putting on 180 with W. W. Bardsley at the Oval, in 1909. The record for the fourth wicket also stands to his credit, as with the late G. H. 8. Trott, he put on 221 at Lord’s in 1896. Sid. Gregory’s name also stands with Joe Darling, as the record-holders for Australia for the fifth wicket in Test matches afainst England, the pair putting on 142 at Melbourne in the 1894-5 season. To show what a splendid batsman Gregory was, his name also appears on the record for the ninth wicket in Test games, as with J. McC. Blackham he put on 154 for this wicket at Sydney in 18945. His highest score in a Test match was the 201 he hit up for Australia against England at Sydney in 1894-5. Of small stature, Sid. Gregory scored most of his runs behind the wicket, and was an adept at the push shot through the slips. He was a most popular player, and captained the Australian team on one English tour. He was also one of the most brilliant fieldsmen at cover-point that the game has known.]
