CHRISTCHURCH TAXI FARES

EFFECT OF COMPETITION Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, July 31. Taxi fares in Christchurch may drop considerably in the near future, according to the statement of the owner of one of the largest taxi firms in Christchurch to-day. A new service ha been operating for a w - eek or two cutting below the present rates in some cases at least, and the older com panies may be forced to drop their fares. The older firms state that if the new company persists with its piecework system they will probably notify the Labour Department that they too intend to pay their employees according to their takings. The proposal is not welcomed by the drivers, who. under the present system, some times take less during a shift than their wages.
