ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY

DISBANDMENT A MATTER FOR REGRET. The chairman of the Reserves Committee (Councillor B. G. H. Burn) has expressed his regret that the Zoological Society had decided to wind up its affairs, for, he said, there was no question that the society had done a very great deal for the Newtown Zoo, not only by donations for the purchase of exhibits and the presentation of animals and birds, but by assisting in keeping up public interest in the Zoo. Councillor Burn has sent the following letter of appreciation to the secretary of the society, Mr. John Castle: — “It is with extreme regret that I learn that your society is about to terminate its activities, and I desire to say, as a city councillor who has for many years been connected with the committee controlling the Wellington Zoologies’! collection, that your society’s efforts have been deeply appreciated, and I feel that the position of the Zoo to-day is due in a large measure to the untiring efforts of your society. I feel sure also that the public of the City of Wellington fully appreciate the good work you have done. “I intend to bring before the reserves department officially the fact that your society is ceasing its activities, and the council’s appreciation of your services will no doubt be conveyed to you in due course.” .
