AUSTRALIA DEFEATS OTAGO A BRIGHT CONTEST By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, July 31. There was a heavy ground for the hockey game betweeu Australia and Otago here to-day. The contest, in which both sides played good fast hockey, resulted in a win for the visitors by two goals to nil. For the greater part of the first spell play was fairly even. Silver, in the front row, was in dashing form, and Oreland and Hanning were playing an excellent defensive game. The first score was an easy one, the ball coming in softly to evade the iroalie’s kick and rolling in. Infringements were frequent on both sides, as Otago speeded up in nn effort to equalise. O’Connor was playing a wonderful game in Australia’s goal, saving time and again when the home side pressed. Shortly after half-time Australia made a determined rush, which culminated in a shot by Stephens which the Otago goalie could not stop. For the remainder of the game, Otago tried hard to catch up and came to grips with the visitors in the circle on many occasions. The forwards, however, were not shooting well, and all attempts on the goal were stopped by O’Connor. The game ended with Otago attacking.
