ANTARCTIC COLD
LITTLE DISCOMFORT TO BYRD PARTY WEATHER CALM AGAIN (United Service.) (By Russell Owen—Special to “New York Times.”) Bay of Whales, July 29. Seventy-two degrees below zero, as it was yesterday, is very cold, but the weather was perfectly calm, and it is astonishing how little discomfort one experiences outdoors under such conditions. The day before there was a raging wind, but still we went outside. Commander Byrd himself takes his usual walks. When the temperature was 66 below with a high wind, however, his eyelids froze together, so we had to pry them open. It appears now that the average for July will be colder than the year Amundsen was here, despite the fact that we had one astonishingly warm day with a temperature of two degrees above zero. Amundsen’s lowest for his year was 74 degrees.
Commander Byrd has received a message from the Governor-General of New Zealand, replying on behalf of the King to the congratulations we sent on the occasion of the recent thanksgiving services.
