MANAWATU TRAINS

NO ALTERATION TO TIMETABLE On the ground that the present timetable appears to suit the requirements of the district, the Railway Department has decided not to disturb the running of trains on the Manawatu line. The above decision has been communicated to Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., in a letter from the Minister of Railways (Hon. W. B. Taverner). The letter is as follows: — “With further reference to your letter of May 22, 1929, regarding the running of ’Field’s ’ Express,’ I desire to inform you that the points discussed by Mr. A. H. Burgess, of V.’aikanae. in his letter to you have been carefully considered, and I now have pleasure in replying thereto as follows :— “It is evident that the residents of the Manawatu district do not desire any alteration in the present departure time (5.40 p.m.) of the train from Thorndon. and. as stated in my memorandum of July 11 to you, it has been decided not to make any change in that direction. “The Department has recently made an adjustment, which it is confidently anticipated will avoid any undue detention of the evening train at Paekakariki. “The earlier arrival at Wellington of the morning train from Palmerston North would not be practicable, except by starting from the latter station much earlier than at present. The prosen* departure time suits passengers who leave the Limited express at Palmerston North and who wish to proceed to intermediate stations on the Manawatu lino. The present time-table appears tn suit the requirements of the district, and. from the information before me. T conclude that it would not be advisable to disturb it. “I desire to express my appreciation of the keen interest which yon are taking in the running of trains on the Mnnawatu line.”
