Where the Buller Road has Parted.—Before the earthquake of June 17 the two men standing in the positions shown on the Buller Road, near White's Creek, would have been side by side on the same level. The upper figure is on the Murchison end of the road. The lower figure is on the Lyell end. It is not yet definitely known whether the Murchison end has gone up or the Lyell end has gone down. When the photograph was taken by Mr. L. May, district engineer, on July 4, the difference in level between the two ends was 13ft. Re-measurement made on July 19 showed that the displacement bad increased to 14ft. 9in. This break in the country runs across both sides of the Buller River, and the locality is being examined to discover how much further it extends.
