PRICE OF POTATOES
DUNEDIN EXPLANATION Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, July 30. Inquiries made in Dunedin this morning do not warrant the statement telegraphed from Wellington that the price of potatoes has risen in the South. The price here has firmed somewhat, but the quotation to-day was £8 10s. The explanation seems to be that speculators in the North have been caught with short supplies, probably owing in some degree to the wet weather affecting digging and delivery, and their eagerness to cover contracts has led to an artificial boom. One of the leading brok'ers here says: "So far as I can make out there are enough potatoes in New Zealand to meet all requirements, and as there is no hope of potatoes being admitted to Australia a real shortage in the Dominion is unlikely. It is understood that the speculating has been going on in Canterbury as well as in Wellington. The seething will in all likelihood soon settle down. Farmers who have been holding for a rise cannot hold for very long.’’
