TIMBER SUPPLIES
GRAVE DANGER OF SHORTAGE OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW ZEALAND Australian Press Assn. —United Service. (Rec. June 19, 0.40 a.m.) London, June 18. Sir Herbert Matthews, former secretary of the Central Chamber of Agriculture, addressing the Royal Empire Society, said that following the growth in the use of woodpulp for newsprint, there was grave danger of a shortage in the Empire’s timber supply. “The increasing requirements for pulp, timber for collieries, building and various other purposes, cannot be met indefinitely from the existing supplies. While the Empire supply of hardwoods is probably sufficient for future needs, the supply of softwoods is rapidly disappearing. But in Australia, South Africa and particularly in New Zealand, there are areas of otherwise waste lands where suitable trees can be grown more advantageously than in many other parts of the world.”
Sir Herbert urged commercial interests to realise the opportunity to provide adequate supplies of timber from the Empire.
