TENDERS FOR TUNNEL
STATEMENT TO-MORROW EVENING
Tenders for the construction of the proposed new tunnel through Mount Victoria were removed from the box at the meeting of the City Council Finance Committee on Monday evening, and the formal instruction that they should be opened by the Town Clerk was agreed to. Beyond the fact that several tenders had been received, the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) stated yesterday that he was not prepared to make any kind of statement, as neither he nor any member of the council, knew anything about them. Particulars as to the tenders would come before the council at Thursday’s meeting, when the facts would be made known.
Tenders were called for this work, not so much, perhaps, as a guarantee that the work would be undertaken, as to see whether the tunnel could be constructed for the amount sanctioned for the work by the poll of 1920— £161,250, plus 10 per cent. (£177,375). Should there be tenders at or below that figure, the council will still have to decide whether there is sufficient justification for the advancement of the work.
