Harriers

(By

“Whipper-In.”)

Local harriers experienced a fiusy time last Saturday. The Scottish Club held their annual race for the McVllly Shield at Lyall Bay, and a fine contest resulted. A. T. Stevens, who ran with fine action, and displayed good judgment, repeated his last year’s performance, and wop from Sinclair by a good twelve yards. Silver, although handicapped by a cold, ran well, and has good prospects of representing Wellington at the New Zealand championships. A big bunch of runners started in the Olympic Club’s Grand Memorial Race, held over one lap of the Vosseler Shield course at Lyall Bay. C. Campbell from the start set a hot pace and was never seriously challenged throughout. A. Carter created a surprise when he came jogging in behind the winner. , Wellington were the guests of the Hutt Valley Club at Hutt Park. From tbe runin, which was held;' T. Sheppard came in first, followed by A. Cutbush and J. Blair. Hutt Valley Club members have been training strenuously for their forthcoming Sanders Cup race, against Masterton this Saturday. A strong team of 30 men and 10 ladies will represent the club. It is with the object of establishing enthusiasm amongst the Masterton ladies that the Valley ladies are making the trip.

Edmund Cup Contest. An important event took place at Wingatui (Dunedin) last Saturday, when fifteen Dunedin clubs end one representative from Christchurch competed for the Edmund Cup. The course led over the specific three miles, and the large field of over ICO runners, and comprising 17 teams, representative of 15 clubs, was sent away, J. G, Barnes, last year's winner, and the only Christchurch representative, soon made his presence felt, and led the bunch, as the field left the straight; J. J. Morris, who eventually wqn, gave a brilliant exhibition, and managed to overhaul Barnes’ In the early stages. Morris, who led for the greater part of the race, received a strong challenge from Barnes, when near home, but with a great sprint, he lengthened the gap, and won by 50 yards. His time of ITmin. 16 3-ssec., was creditable, considering the sticky nature of the course. In connection with the Cup race, a teams’ race and a sealed handicap were held.

The following are the first fo®r to finish in the individual event: —

J. J. Morris (Caversham No. 1) 1 J. G. Barnes (Christchurch)-...., 2

Peter Wilson finished up fifth in the Memorial race on Saturday, and considering thia was his first run for a while, it seems that he will, upon getting fit, be a serious contender in any race. Lachie McLachlan, the New Zealand half-mile champion, was well in the running in the first part of the Edmund Cup, but appears to have fizzled out, as he was not mentioned in the first fifteen. J. Sheppard is well in the running for the Wellington provincial championships, and, i" the opinion of "Whipper-iq,” he should'be one of the first three to finish. Stevens (Scottish) should be n serious contender in the forthcoming championships. Cutbush (Hutt Valley) is already showing much promise. “Whipper-In” notes with pleasure that J. Hutton is again appearing for the Hutt Valley Club. Bain, Kent, McCarthy and Matson should all run prominently at Masterton on Saturday. Fixtures.

The following are the club fixtures for next Saturday (June 22): — Hutt Valley-Masterton contest, Sanders Cup, at Masterton. Brooklyn Club.—Cooke Cup, Lyall Bay. •Wellington Clqb.—Press Cup, Lyall Bay. Olympic Qlub. —Weekly run, Lyall Bay.
