TRAMS AND BUSES
LACK OF CO-ORDINATION
The need for co-ordination of the bus and tramway services was stressed last night at the executive meeting of the Hataitai Electors' Association, when the opinion was again expressed that the department did not want the buses to pay, and the residents and ratepayers were up against a brick wall all the time. The matter arose over the failure of the motorman of the 8.13 tram one morning to await the arrival of the bus from Waitoa Road, which was in sight. The two succeeding through cars did not stop as they were already full, and the passengers from the bus did not reach the city until after 8.30. The general manager of the tramways department wrote explaining the circumstances, saying the bus was late on arrival at the terminus, and the through trams were ordered through by the inspector. Another tram did not leave the terminus until six minutes later. On learning there were passengers using the bus who desired to catch the 8.13 tram he would see if the time of the bus could not be advanced a little so that it could reach the corner of Hataitai and Waitoa Roads in time. The chairman remarked that the through cars at that hour were invariably packed. He did not think the department wanted to make the buses pay, and the association was up against a brick wall all the time. He had seen trams leave just as the bus was arriving at the corner. Mr. Pearce: People will lose the use of their legs soon. I saw two men wait ten minutes at the stores for a bus to go down to the ram terminus, and they could walk there easily in less than half the time. (Laughter.) It was decided to write to the general manager pressing for the co-ordi-nation of the bus and tram services, and also to refer the matter to the Eastern Suburbs League.
