EMPIRE WAR VETERANS

SERVICE IN THE CRIMEA Dominion Special Service. Auckland, June 3. Speaking at the King’s Empire Veterans’ luncheon to-day, the GovernorGeneral said the title of King’s Empire Veteran was the proudest a man could bear, and there were before him many worthy bearers of the title., “I see on the breast of one veteran, the New Zealand Cross and the medals of the Indian Mutiny and the Crimean War,” said His Excellency. “I see beside him two wearers of the Victoria Cross, three noble decorations in line, and three men of whom the Empire may well be proud.

“It is well to remember,” continued Sir Charles, “that in honouring veterans we are honouring the men who built up the Empire and made New Zealand what it is to-day. Other wars have come and gone, but we must not forget those who in troublous and in peaceful times helped to build up the Empire and to carry on its finest traditions.”
