FROM FAR AND NEAR Exceptional Rainfall.— The rainfall at Whangarei last month was 9.99 inches. For the past ten years the average for April has been 4.l9.—Press Assn. British Miners’ Fund.— Au Australian Press Association-United Service message from London states that the Lord Mayor’s miners’ fund closed at £843,440, to which the Government adds an equal amount. Sentence for Manslaughter.—A Press Association message from Melbourne states that Annie Hilliard, convicted of the manslaughter of David Wilson, for whom she was the housekeeper, was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment. Alfred Wilson, son of the deceased, was acquitted and discharged. Polling Booths on Trains.—A Press Association message from Brisbane states that polling booths will be established on railway trains travelling over the main lines of the State on polling day for the general election on May 11. This is an innovation never before permitted in Australia. Fire in Bulgarian Parliament House.— A fire in the Bulgarian Parliamentary Building destroyed practically the whole interior, including the debating chamber, states an Australian Press Association message from Sofia. The police believe that the fire was due to the wilful fusing of electric wires. Claim for Damages Fails.—At the Timaru Supreme Court yesterday (states a Press Association message, a jury gave a verdict for defendant in a civil ease in which Mary Catherine Mangin, of Temuka. claimed from Hector Andrew Sim, a farmer of Carew, £2OOO, as the result of the death of plaintiff’s husband through alleged negligent drivipg of a car by defendant, in King Street, Temuka. on February 18.
