Miniature Rifle Shooting

OSMOND AND LADIES’ SHIELD INDIVIDUAL “OWN START” COMPETITION. . (By “Aperture.”) A ver.v happy company of riflewomen and riflemen met at-the Wellington Miniature Rifle Association range at the Winter Show Building on Saturday last, when the individual "own start" competition event was successfully conducted. The whole meeting was managed with machine-like efficiency, and the wonderful atmosphere of esprit de corps that is characteristic of this kind of sport pervaded thO range. The principal position of honour was attained by Rifleman A. V. G. Wilson, whose amazing and unprecedented series of three successive "possibles' was the sensation of the meeting and elicited a spontaneous warmth of congratulations. There was never a more astounded man than was this rifleman, but he is particularly delighted in being able to fulfil a certain promise lie had made should lie. have the good fortune to bring off the "hat trick.” and in the doing of it (lie was the last man on the mound) one may judge his astonishment when he found lie bad accomplished what to him appeared to be the impossible. C Willis was the first to gain the honour and was followed by fourteen other successful marksmen in the order in which they achieved their object, namely, by: J. Walmsley, Robertson, and lent. Mrs. Tunks, Miss Foy. Mr. Hoffeins, Mrs. J. Staples. Messrs. Exton, P. B. Goldfinch, L. Hare, and Ross, Mrs. Skipage, R. Chapman, and Miss Harper. More than twenty-five obtained ninety-nines. The actual gun-score results revealed a high standard of marksmanship, and promises well for a close and interesting contest at the next championship meeting to be held in June, and in all the interclub matches which commence this week. There .were 140 entries and all but six clubs were represented. . The untiring zeal and devotion to duty of the lion, secretary, Mr. O. M annell, ably assisted by Miss M annell anti by other members of Ills family, was greatly appreciated, ns was the performance by Messrs. W. G. McPhun, J. Staples, and A, \. G. Wilson of the unenviable task of scoring. Much credit is due to the range officers, Messrs. O. H. Heniplemaii and W. A. Nicholson, for the able and efficient manner in which thev performed their duties, and the thanks of the association are extended to the markers, especially to Messrs. C. Hoffeins and G. Spencer, and to all the other voluntary workers, whose assistance contributed much to the success of the shoot. Without a doubt these shoulder-to-shoulder contests are an incentive to the sport, and as a sport for the people (apart from any other phase of it) it is one of the most fascinating civilian pastimes that can be enjoyed. Ladies' Shield. ' Featherston ladies are congratulated on their will in the Ladies' Shield competition Their lead of eight points of the Brooklyn ladies, who were second, speaks well for their achievement. The increase in the number of ladies’ teams entering for this match is very pleasing, while the individual scores are consistently good. The highest scores were recorded by Mesdamcs Emmett, Nightingale, O’Brien, and Wannell. Misses Habib and Till, three of whom arc members of the winning team. The results are ns follow :- Featherston Ladles.-. Misses Nix, 02; Benton, (MJ; Habib, 68; McCarty, 65; John-

Osmond Shield. The commencement of the season by the recently-formed Karori Club, destined to give good accounts of themselves, lias resulted in a popular win in the Osmond Shield competition. Their effort is a great credit to them. The Featherston team had a wonderful fight for the shield, and though their loss by a small margin is to be regretted, there is comfort in the thought that they are* a club to be reckoned with, their standard of marksmanship being very high. . ..... The highest scores were the possible honours of Messrs. Goldfinch (Hutt) and McDougall (Railway). The targets of the Suburbs team have not. yet been submitted for checking, but the result will not affect the position. It is unofficially stated that Mottram scored a possible for his team. The number of teams competing (12) is a record. The number of fill’s scored by the 120 competitors thus represented was 18. of which the Harbour Board team claims s—a very creditable performance Indeed. Of the new members known to have participated, special mention is made of Miss Cave and Williams, both of the Public .Service, whose scores were a great credit to them. A glance at the scores, particularly of the team which so successfully competed for the shield three times in succession last year, reveals the unfortunate off-night fact which has no respect for the good or the inferior shot. The results are as follow:— Karori.—Haase, 67; Caldwell, 68; Old, 61); Boon, sen., 67; Dore, 69; Miss Harper, 68; Swanson, 61); Freeman, 67; Boon, jun.. 65: Grove, 66. Total, 675.
