THE MAJESTIC ORCHESTRA
MR. G. ELLWOOD APPOINTED CONDUCTOR. Mr. George Ellwood, the well-known and greatly talented 'cellist, and conductor of tlie 2YA Orchestra! has been appointed conductor of tlie Majestic Theatre orchestra, and will take up his duties on the opening of Hint theatre a fortnight hence. Mr Ellwood is a member of the talented Ellwood familv of Christchurch. As a mere child he showed a preeociousncss in music that was remarkable, and when be toured New Zealand (as a child) with the Ellwood Trio, under tlie management of Mr Hugo Goriitz sonic twenty years ago, ids 'eel ii playing was the outstanding feature of the concerts. Later he went to Europe to further his studies, and at the Liege Conservatoire, bore away the Grande Prix at. a record early ago, his predecessor in that position being M. Eugene Ysnvo, the famous Belgian violinist. A few veers ago he returned to New Zealand, and "has been teaching in Wellington for three wars past with marked success. At •1 recent recital he proved conclusively that he is ii tlie virtuoso class. Mr. Ellwood intends to introduce the string orchestra (witii o-gan). and has already secured the valued services of Miss Ava Symons as leader. .
