On the Glasgow trams is a little red box in which fares are dropped, by passengers leaving before the conductor has collected their fares. In seven months last year there was collected in one of the boxes over £736. The Romans made candles of string surrounded by wax or dipped in pitch. Splinters of wood covered with fat were used in England about 1300. The Chinese make candles from wax obtained from the candleberry tree. A bridal outfit, consisting of wedding cake, bouquet, wedding dress and veil, shoes, stockings, wedding ring and carriages for the wedding, was the prize for the single woman with the highest score at a Harrow whist drive.
