REV. J. K. ARCHER’S NARROW VICTORY IN CHRISTCHURCH MAY HAVE TO FACE AN OPPOSITION COUNCIL The most exciting Mayoral contest in the Dominion appears to have been fought in Christchurch, where the sitting Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer (Labour) fought a straight-out duel with Mr. Hayward, citizens’ candidate. After the heaviest poll on record Mr. Archer was returned by a comparatively narrow majority. At Dunedin Mr. R. S. Black was returned in a field of four, the Labour candidate finishing third. Auckland pinned its faith to Mr. G. Baildon, who was returned with a majority of nearly a thousand over his nearest opponent. Except where otherwise stated, the following results have been received per the Press Association.

CHRISTCHURCH RECORD POLLING. The Mayoralty contest resulted as follows: — J. K. Archer (Labour), (reelected) 15,4 W. Hayward (Citizens) .. 14,920 The poll was the biggest ever recorded. The election of the council is by proportional representation, and the counting will not be completed to-night, indications are that citizens candidates will have a small majority on the new council. AUCKLAND The following was the result of the Mayoral contest: — G. Baildon (present Mayor) 7b39 T. Bloodworth (Labour) .. 6637 H. E.. Vaile 5083 W. H. Murray 4214 One small result to come. For the Mayoralty the voting was: J. H. Harkness (sitting Mayor), 777; George Scandrett, 636. Majority for Harkness, 141. PALMERSTON NORTH Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May 1. The number of voters at the local body elections was not large. The voting took place at 22 booths, and a staff of about 50 was engaged. Four voting papers had to be filled in. There were 16 candidates for the Borough Council, and all the old councillors offered their services again. The contest for the Mayoralty resulted in an overwhelming defeat for Mr. Edwards. There were many gasps of surprise to be heard when the final election results were made in Masterton to-night. Although apparently there was no great interest, ratepayers turned out in better numbers than was thought, as approximately 1400 votes were entered at the various polling booths. Throughout the day was steady, thought at no time were any of the booths overworked. Shortly before 8 o’clock a small crowd gathered in front of the main polling booth at the municipal buildings, and when the final announcement was made at about 10 o’clock, there was a fair number of people congregated. For this year the Masterton Borough Council will be comprised of the following councillors: — W. White 1286 A. D. Low 1279 T. S. Jenkins 1275 A. Rippon '. 1251 W. H. Saunders 1228 J. L. For the Wanganui Mayoral election supporters of the sitting Mayor, Mr. M. J. Rogers, were confident that he would head the poll at least by upwards of a 500 majority, but the most sanguine supporters never anticipated that his victory over his oppents would be such a sweeping one. the figures being:— Rogers 5128 Hope Gibbons 2432 Morrison 750 In a straight-out contest at the last election Mr. Rogers only beat Mr. Hope Gibbons by 92.
