PURCHASE OF BATHING COSTUMES
* ENGLISH MAKE OR NEW ZEALAND? By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, April 30. Whether the bathing costumes required for the tepid baths should be imported or manufactured locally was discussed nt a meeting of the City Council. The Baths Committee reported that early last year three dozen good bathing costumes were purchased from England as an experiment, and had given every satisfaction. The committee now asked for authority to purchase a further eighteen dozen costumes from England with the council’s name specially marked on the fabric at an estimated cost of £65. Inquiries had been made locally, but the costumes could not be purchased of Dominion manufacture within 40 per cent, of the English quotation. Councillor Cook objected to the proposal on behalf of the local clothing trade employees. He alleged that. at Home the goods in question were made under sweated labour. Other speakers advocated the support, ing of local industry, and it was agreed to refer the report back to the committee.
