ANNUAL REPORTS ROSENEATH The annual report of the Roseneath School Committee states that the playarea on the north side of the school has been concreted and fenced in, providing one of the finest children’s play areas in New Zealand. Library accommodation has been provided for the books, and swings and see-saws have been put in ordeij in addition to the purchase of u piano, and the provision of new records for the gramophone. The incoming committee, is recommended to have the present teachers room extended so as to provide an up-to-date teachers’ room, and also an office for the headmaster. The work of beautification of the grounds was continued, and, thanks to the assistance of Mr. McKenzie, Director of Reserves, about one-hundred trees and shrubs were planted on the western slopes. It is hoped that this work of beautifying the grounds with gardens and trees will be continued. The school was able to carry out its work with only one change in the staff of teachers. The committee congratulates the headmaster and staff on tho excellent tone and work of the school, as evidenced by the very good reports received from the inspectors, and the results of the proficiency examinations. Of the thirteen, scholarships awarded to Wellington, two came to Roseneath, Mollie Denton and Peggy Bridge both gaining junior national scholarships. In addition, Peggie Bridge was granted a Trentham Scholarship, and was the dux for 1928. The average- attendance for the year ended December 31, 1928, was 181 as compared with 164 for the preceding year. The present roll number is 218. The school has been again most successful with its sports during the year. During the summer months regular instruction had been given to the children in all standards in swimming and life-saving. At the close of the season the pupils attempted distance swimming, and 86 certificates were wou for distances ranging from 25 yards to 2000 yards; and of these 22 swam the required distance to entitle them to a free pass to Te Aro Baths for one year. SOUTH WELLINGTON The annual report for the South Wellington School Committee states that thirteen meetings were held during the year, the average attendance being eight. Mr. Edie (headmaster) was also present at all meetings; the valuable assistance given by him was greatly appreciated by the committee. The attendance bad been affected more or less throughout the’year by various epidemics. Sports requirements were supplied to all branches. The children’s ball in aid of this fund realised £l7 2s. Id. Hot drinks (cocoa) was provided for the children during the winter months. It was found necessary to regrade the banks at the Russell Terrace entrance. The committee expresses its appreciation for the work carried out, throughout the year, by Mr. Edie and the scholars. The school sports held at Athletic Park were again a great success, and thanks were due to the staff for the efficient manner in which the meeting was carried out; also to the Wellington Rugby Union for the use of the park. During the year the Home and School Association was formed, and when properly unejer way would in many ways be of great assistance to the school committee. A very successful concert by the school children under the auspices of this association was held, the proceeds being in aid of the school furniture. The committee wished to thank Mr. Swanson for generous donation to provide cricket practice wickets in the school grounds; Mrs. Tanner, Mrs. Collyer and Mr. Collyer sports trophies, and the Felix Entertainers for donation- to Library Fund. . A credit balance of £136 10s. sd. is shown in the general account, and a credit balance of £153 16s. Id. in the special account. -
