Sir Joseph Ward, in welcoming members, said it was very pleasing to know that such an important matter was being taken in hand by men so well informed and qualified to act. Mr. Troup, on behalf of the board, thanked the Prime Minister for consenting to preside over their meetings. He was sure that the board and the Government would work together harmoniously and to the interests of all concerned.

Sir Joseph Ward said the board members could rest assured that they would at all times have the sympathy and co-operation of his colleagues. He was only too ready to do anything that was at his disposal. (Applause.) The Mayor outlined the history of the movement and stated that the late Mr. Massey had promised to donate £15,000 towards the erection of a tower for the carillon.

Sir Joseph Ward said that the present Government would undertake to fulfil the promise made by Mr. Massey. (Applause.) “Everything augurs well for the carrying out of the ' programme,” added the Prime Minister. Mr. Cecil Woods, of Christchurch, was appointed professional adviser to the board. The question of appointing two assessors was deferred until a future meeting. Mr. H. M. Gore was appointed secretary and Mr. Troup deputy-chairman. The decision that the competition in connection with the design of the memorial be restricted to architects residing in New Zealand was reaffirmed.
