On a recent afternoon a pair of kingfishers were to be seen perched on the transmission line of the' dredge Vulcan, in the vicinity of the cement works "(states the “Otago Daily Times”). It is many years since these interesting birds were seen so close to the city. In the early days they were very plentiful on the road to Black Jack’s Point, and round the shore of Lake Logan, and also on the lower road leading to Portobello. With the incoming tide a run of sprats was making up the Leith. The kingfishers had probably followed the fish up from the Lower Harbour. A couple of shags were close in feeding on the fish.
