Mr. Arthur H. Neate, formerly conductor of the Octagon Theatre (Dunedin) orchestra, who recently returned from a visit to England and the Continent, and Australia, has decided to take up his residence in Wellington as a teacher <>f tlie violin. Whilst in Europe Mr. Neate visited Berlin, where die had the pleasure of hearing many of the ’JVagnerian operas produced bn a most lavish scale, and sung by a galaxy of splendid artists. Mr. Neate says that it is only in Germany that one may see the Wagnerian operas performed perfectly, as he witnessed some of the works elsewhere on the Continent with not nearly the same v artistic satisfaction. Mr. Neate is a second cousin of Sir Frederick Cowen, and when in England spend a good deal of time with him. Mr. Neate has studied the violin under Herr Heinecke (of the Adelaide Conservatorium), Mr. Horace Watts, of Sydney, and Mr.- F. M.
