THE RACING WORLD

HAWKE’S BAY MEETING OPENS f,A SHIRR WINS CUB; TOXEUMA THE SPRINT GASCONY NARROWLY WINS THE STAKES • ' ’(By, Telegraph.—From “The Watcher”) Hastings, April 19. The autumn meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club opened to-day in fine weather, but a keen southerly wind made its presence ‘felt early. Later in the day conditions improved. The track was ' ’’dead as the result of recent rains. Cashier won the Hawke’s Bay Cup from White Fang and Papatu, •nd the Stakes fell to Gascony, who just beat Admiral Drake, with Cimabue a poor third. The Porangahau Handicap was won by ■Toxeuma, with Miss Ransom second and Great Charter third.

The attendance, was moderate, but despite several surprise results, the totalisator turnover for the day was £13,60a, against £12,910 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £695. An inquiry was held into the mishap to My Own in the Stakes, in which she lost her rider. The hearing was not concluded. Between races Silver Paper ran half a mile from a stand in 491 sec. MANGATARATA HURDLES. The meeting started with a surprise, Rakaupango settling down in front and leading all the way in the hurdles. He carried only £9l. Highwayman went with him for the best part of the journey, and in the early and middle stages their nearest attendants were Crishna, Abisogne, Mandarine, and Atareria, well strung out. Raukaupango and Highwayman led by two lengths at the half-mile from Atareria, Mandarine, Abisogne, and t Crishna. On the torn Braeman drew up and Rakaupango was ■ followed into the straight by Highwayman, Mandarine, Braeman, Abisogne, and Atareria. Once over Rakaupango held on and beat Braeman by a neck, with Highwayman the best part of a length back. Mandarine was a couple of lengths down. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. A moderate lot contested the HighWeight Handicap. Kinross, Clavers and Charmaline were all well backed. The . supporters of Kinross got the best run, for Charmaline got very badly off, and Clavers was never dangerous. The pace was made by Tan and King Manu, but at the half King’s Jest took charge, with Kin- . ross handy, and Tab, King Manu. Jen, and Tunbridge also prominent. King’s Jest led into the straight, and although Kinross challenged, he failed by half a length. Tunbridge was two lengths away, clear of Jen, and then came CurtBey and King Manu. The winner showed good form in the spring, but had failed since. He looked well, and was too solid at the finish for Kinross, who had every chance. NURSERY HANDICAP. Hunting Boy, favourite for the two-year-old race, had every ehance, beginning well, and being out in front inside a furlong. There was almost as much money for the local horse Hunting .Cry, who drew No. 1, and in the finish he won Easily. With Hunting Boy when well settled down was Ben Hur, then Hunting Cry, but the latter stumbled soon after the start and went back several places; he soon went up again, however, and the order on the turn was Hunting Boy and ’ Ben Hur from Hunting Cry, Royal Line, Lordlike, and Clever. Once in line Hunting Boy began to weaken, and then Hunting Cry put in his claim, going on to win by over two lengths from Ben Hur, who beat Hunting Boy by a couple of lengths. Lordlike was fourth, then came Anda, Royal Line, Clever, and Valpre. Hunting Cry won so decisively even after stumbling that no excuse can be made for the others. He is a good deal above the average. Valpre, but for drawing No. 14, might possibly have been closer. HAWKE’S .BAY STAKES. Five went to the post in the Stakes, and Gascony, on whom the stable solely relied,., was' returned a solid favourite. They got away in good line, and then Admiral Drake showed ahead with Gascony inside him, and they, were soon clear of Cimabue, Millais, and My Own. The latter got on to th_e heels of one of the others, and threw her rider. Gascony and Admiral Drake gradually drew away, and the two-year-old stuck on well, actually headed Gascony in the straight. Gascony came again, but only won. by a head. Cimabue was five or six lengths back, two lengths in front of Millais. Admiral Drake gave the backers of the favourite some anxiety, but he found the .distance just a bit far. It was a good performance on Gascony’s part to give gway 371 b. and win after being taken on all the way. Cimabue was . never ' going well. HAWKE’S BAY CUP. As a result of a good track gallop; in wliieh he accounted decisively for Trcsham and Papatu, Cashier was installed favourite in the Cup, but Blimp, White Fan_g, and Papatu were all well backed. ’A siow-run race in the early stages did not make it a true test of staying, but 'Cashier stuck on well at the finish just the same. White Fang was last to move, but was in the front before the end of a. furlong, and led through the straight by tour lengths from Goodwill, Cashier, Blimp, High Court, Papatu. and Tresham. In the back stretch White Fang had a good lead from Cashier, who, on the turn, was clear of Blimp; then came the bunch, which was tailed by Papatu. Cashier went after the leader on the turn, and was the only one making much impression. He caught the leader inside a furlong of the post, and won by half n length. Papatu finished over the beaten lot, and was three lengths away third, half a length in front of High Court. Five lengths further back eame Goodwill, Tresham, and Blimp. Cashier from start to finish was the only one ever likely to catch the leader. Papatu finished on, and High Court ran n creditable race, but the others were well beaten. POUKAWA HANDICAP. Rank outsiders came home in the hack sprint. There were no unusual happenings in this event, but there was nearly a remarkable coincidence, for Keen, who won the race last year and paid a sensational dividend, again went .within an ace of winning—in fact, should have won. Bernera, who gave trouble at the start, was first out. and joined by Keen, led From Tom Byrne, Flying Binge and Kimbo. On the turn St. Melba and Gold Bag became more prominent. Bernera led into the straight, where Keen ran wide. Keen got up again, and had Bernera beaten a good way off the post, but Gold Bag then came along and beat Keen

home by a king neck. Flying Binge was two lengths awny third, with Sylvan Dell fourth, then came Kimbo, Shortly, Bernera, and St. Melba. Second Thought, the favourite, was always in the ruck. Bernera had every chance. But for running wide into the straight Keen would probably have won. There was money for Desert Lad, but he got into a lot of trouble, and was well back last at the turn, bar Nightwatch and Dimmer, who got away badly. / AUTUMN HANDICAP. Teri scored a fairly comfortably win in the Autumn Handicap. He was boldly challenged by the favourite, Spearmiss, in the run home, but was never seriously threatened with defeat. Tanagra soon opened up a big break on Good Sport, with Kaiti, Teri and Comical well-strung out, the rear being brought up by Rowley. Then began to close on Tanaga on the home turn, and Teri led into the straight from Kaiti and Tanagra. Spearmiss challenged when well into the straight, but Ten beat her by a length. Comical was three lengths away,' followed by Thrift, Kaiti, Jeanette, and Rowley. Starboard Light, who carried only £5 less than Spearmiss, got completely left and took no part in the race. Teri won well. There was a lot of money for Thrift, and she went a creditable race. PORANGAHAU HANDICAP. Great Charter and Toxeuma were the only two seriously considered in the concluding event. Kaihoro, Helotis, Great Charter, and Toxeuma ran abreast to the half from Merry Mint and Royal Duke. Toxeuma dropped back’ on the turn and followed Kaihoro, Helotis, and Great Charter into the straight. Great Charter took charge a furlong from home, but Toxeuma challenged and won by half a length from Miss Ransom, who came fast and beat Great Charter by a similar margin. Royal Duke was a close fourth, and then came Moa Bird, 'Merry Alint, and Epistle. Toxeuma won very "decisively,, although he wag. three horses out all the. way to the straight. Great Charter had • every chance. Royal Duke’s finishing effort was impressive. Miss Ransom, Moa Bird 'and Merry Mint went creditably, Z DETAILS OF THE RACING MANGATARATA HACK HURDLES, of 130 sovs.; second horse 20 sovs., and third 10 sovs. from the stake. TROTTING TE AROHA MEETING (By “Overcheck.”) The racing at Te Aroha to-day promises to be full of interest. The first race is the Waitoa Handicap, 3.33 class, one mile and a half. Twentyone have accepted, and of this number sixteen are on scratch. At Thames last month Gold Treasure and Belle Axworthy finished third and fourth respectively in the Hikutaia Handicap, while later in the day the former ran second to Dealer in the Turua Handicap, going 3.38. Of the others possibly Oliver Thorpe, Benefice and Regret will do best, though with so many in front of her the latter will probably have to cover a good deal of extra ground. Oliver Thorpe ran third to Little Guy and El Direct over two miles at Wanganui, and was similarly placed behind Mild Derby and Lady Author in the Innovation Handicap. The three in most demand may be Regret, Gold Treasure and Benefice. In the Elstow Handicap, of one mile and a half, for unhoppled trotters, horses likely to be inquired for are Te Ngutu, Paradigm, Nelson Girl and Don Zoloch. The first-named won the Parawai Handicap at Thames from Nelson Girl and Wild Downs. On that occasion Paradigm, who was second favourite, was unplaced. Don Zoloch’s best effort this season was her second to Cervine at the Waikato meeting in December, when he was credited with having gone 3.41 4-5. He is now on 3.44. Of the back-markers. Royal Bob may do best. The order of favouritism may be Don Zoloeh, Tc Ngutu and Paradigm. , The ’Manawaru Handicap of two miles, 4.48 class, should find Warspite, Nella Dillon Haerenga Pai, Nelson Dillon and Rolfe Audubon well up in the betting. Since winning the Hikutaia Handicap at Thames Warspite has been raced at Hawera and at Wanganui. In the Liverpool Handicap of two miles on the second day of the Wanganui meeting Warspite ran third in 4 41 2-5 as against 4.47 the mark he is now on. Haerenga Pai won over a mile and a quarter at Wanganui and is now approaching her best form. Nelson Dillon and Rolfe Audubon are both young horses of considerable promise. The former ran second to Concertina in the Newmarket Handicap at the Otahuhu summer meeting, registering 3.27 3-5. Rolfe Audubon’s latest placed performance was his third to Cornelian and Limosa in the Raglan Handicap of two miles at the Waikato meeting last month, when he registered 4.44. Nella Dillon ran fourth over two miles at Thames, the third horse, to whom she was conceding 24 yards, registering 4.42 4 ; 5. Later in the day she ran third over a mile and a quarter in 2.53. The stake may be divided between Warspite, Nella Dillon, and Rolfe Audubon. The race for the Te Aroha Cup should be a good one. On Thames form Concertina appears the best of the three on scratch, notwithstanding that at the Waikato meeting Limosa registered 4.37 2-5 when she finished second to Cornelian (4.35 2-5) in the Raglan Handicap. Still, Limosa should be on the up-grade and her chances must be respected. Great Peter, we know, is a good horse, but at Hawera he disappointed and it would seem that he is not a good traveller. Rockburn won the Thames Cup from Tonv Victor and Concertina and now meets the’ latter on 24 yards worse terms. There was only a neck between the winner and second horse.-with Concertina a length and a half away, so she appears to have received favourable treatment at the hands of the handicapper. Medusa has raced most consistently and her record is three wins, a second and two thirds out of six starts. She went 4.37 3-5 in the Richmond Handicap at Otahuhu in February and is now placed on 4.37. Possibly she will do best of those in the second half of the handicap With the advantage of position that they should secure by being on scratch. Concertina and Limosa should take some overhauling, but Great Peter and Medusa should bo very handy when the field is racing over the last furlong. Form In the Waitoa Handicap may give a lead as to the possibilities of most of the runners in the Ruahaka Handicap, in which Gaza, Gold Treasure, and Great Ballin look likely to be in demand. The first-named has no recent form on which to assess his chances, but he is a fairly useful sort. Gold Treasure’s form has been referred to above. Great Ballin ran second to Ngahuia at Hawera on the second day. going 3.33 1-5. He is not now racing against such a strong field, and may possibly be made favourite. Twenty-five are due to contest the Hot Springs Handicap, which bears a most open appearance. Haerenga Pai and Benefice are a likely pair on scratch. Great Ballin, if reserved for the event, should give a good account of himself. Enawah does not appear to have struck form, but is nicely placed otherwise. Of the remainder, Regret and Limosa should be in demand. Possibly the two first-men-tioned will find most favour. In the Waihou Handicap, of two miles, the unhoppled trotters will again be seen in action. Direct Action and Royal Bob, who ran first and third at Thames, are now meeting the scratch horses on better terms, and so must be given a great chance. The two that may trouble them most are Scbisca and Anseline. Of this pair Scbisca is preferred. Tn the Farewell Handicap, Dad’s Hope, Huon Grattan, and Scandal may be in Cha itaaaad. three finished second, third, and fourth respectively to Ursuline. On that occasion Dad’s Hope was conceding 24yds. to the winner; now he receives 12yds. Huon Grattan and Scandal meet Ursuline on 24yds. and 48yds. better terms respectively. The latter therefore appears to be very nicely placed. Ashburton Meeting. The fields arc so large at Ashburton that in all probability a number of horses will have their chances ruined by their inability to secure a clear run, and this will apply with added force to horses on the back marks. Horses that look likely to be well supported are the following:— Improvers' Handicap.—Kelp, Francis de Oro, and Speedlight. Allenton Handicap.—Blue and Gold, Great Nelson and Admiral Bingen. Durbar Handicap.—Linkman, Evelyn Locanda and Shadowland. Harvest Handicap.—Nonsuit, Return Voyage and Lady Cello. Autumn Handicap.—Kelp, Toorhead and Mountain Ore. Utility Handicap.—Kereta, Accumulator and Eva Reta. . Rakaia Handicap—Becky Mine, Sylvia Logan and Vikota. Farewell Handicap.—Dan Logan, Roger Lyon anfl Donald.
