CASH ORDER TRADING

CONFLICTING OPINIONS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, March 8. The Hon. J. G. Cobbe continued his inquiry into the cash order system ,todiijsl He heard'four witnesses—three in favour of the system and one against it. Of the . three who favoured the system, one was a director of a bdot importing firm, one a director of a soft goods warehouse, and one the managing director of a drapery firm. The fourth, who opposed the system, was Mr. W. Machin, manager of the New Zealand Farmers’, Co-operative Association Ltd. ' For the. system, witnesses argued that it was a safe form -of- trading good for the seller and helpful to the buyer. All said their cash order trade did. not exceed'ten per cent, of the total. If it increased greatly they would have to increase prices to provide for the heavy discounts allowed cash order companies. One witness said .big drapery houses were trying to destroy the system because it helped their weaker rivals. Mr. Machin declared the system was really a money-lending system, and was unsound trading. He said there was little cash order trading in. Canterbury.
