HIGHWAYS BOARD FUNDS

BIG SUM IN HAND

According to a statement made at the conference between the North and South Island Motor Unions yesterday, the cash in the hands of the Main Highways Board in both funds at the end of February aiqpunted to £1,089,910, to which should be added the sum of £80,704, representing tire tax, motor vehicle fees, and motqr spirits taxation, paid into the Consolidated Fund, but not transferred to the Main Highways revenue fund, making a total of £l,170,614. The authorisations at that date in both funds amounted to £1,315,501, representing an excess of cash available of £144,947. Mr. F. W. Freeman, president of the Canterbury Automobile Association: Those figures are not a bit of ' use to us. By the time the authorisations are made the board will have collected three more millions.

The chairman (Mr. A. J. Toogood): Yes, I think that fact ought to go out to the public. Mr. J. H. Edmondson said that in his opinion the motorists were asked to pay too much in advance. '< Mr. A. E. Ansell (president of the South Island Motor Union): The trouble is the board is not spending the money quickly enough.
