STRADIVARIUS

192-YEAR-OLD SECRET DISCOVERED. Antonio Stradivarius, who gave his name to the famous violins, considered the best ever manufactured, died in 1737. On the anniversary of his death, December IS, a carpenter, to whom an old desk had been given to be restored, found in a secret drawer a' number of manuscripts, among which, one in Stradivarius’s own handwriting, gave particulars of a secret process for treating wood with varnishes which gave his violins their unique tone. It appears that Stradivarius entrusted the papers containing the secret to an abbot friend of his, who had placed them in the drawer, where they had remained undiscovered till the present day. An attempt was made by the carpenter to sell the secret of Stradivarius to a violin manufacturer in Milan, but the authorities having learnt of what was afoot, Intervened and impounded the documents.
