DOOMED TO HOUSE OF LORDS

THE NEW ’EARL HOWE Dominion Special Service. London, January 17. ; Viscount' Curzon, the Conservative Whip and member for South Battersea, has not only lost his father, Earl Howe, but his seat in the House of Comihons. If, and when, the House of Lords is reformed, some arrangement may be made which will enable an M.P. who is the eldest son of a Peer to remain in the House of Commons, but, meanwhile, the new Earl Howe cannot escape his fate, and must go to the House of Lords willynilly. Lord Middleton and Lord Seibourne,, when they were in the House of Commons, made a gallant and ingenious attempt to stay in the Lower Chamber, and in this they were actively assisted by the late Marquis Curzon. Unfortunately, the British Constitution was against them, and the Speaker had no option but to rule that the House of Commons must see them no more. A similar fate,/in due course, awaits Lieut.-Commander Kenworthy, and it will be Interesting in future years to watch the effect of the House of Lords atmosphere on such a robustious Parliamentarian. • The new Earl Howe was well known to the general public on account of his beautiful Rolls-Royce, which was always exceeding the speed limit. I imagine that he has more endorsements on his license than any other motorist, but despite the number of endorsements he has only once figured in a motor accident, for which he was in no way responsible, f He, Indeed, did a great deal to render obsolete the speed limit by making prosecution for its technical breach almost ridiculous. His ear, with its bright colouring, was very conspicuous, and this no doubt explains why he was always receiving attention at the hands of the police. But he is, in fact, a most careful and experienced driver.
