THE RACING WORLD

THIRD DAY OF VICTORIAN MEETING

FINAL DAY AT RANGITIKEI

RANGITIKEI MEETING FRASER MEMORIAL TO MANLY DOBBIN WINS OPEN SPRINT Dominion Special Service. Bulls, .March 7. The Rangitikei meeting concluded in fine weather to-day, when Manly and Dobbin w’on the principal events. The attendance was large, and the track was in good order after additional rain. The totalisator handled £11,864, against £ll,800 on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £25,385, against £25,649 last year. SANSON HURDLES. - Only four contested the Sanson Hurdles, and Airtight was a short-priced favourite. Rangiutu was the early leader, but soon ran himself out, and Hymestrasou took up the running. Airtight joined him at the last hurdle, which both jumped at ’an angle. Hymestrason straightened up more smartly than Airtight, and beat him home by a good length. Novar was two lengths away third, and Rangiutu was beaten off. MAIDEN HANDICAP. Recent form was followed by bettors, in the Maiden Handicap, Snowshoe being made favourite, with Grattan and Lady Lucerne well backed; Nasselle also carried big support. Snowshoe and Lady Lucerne were the first to move, and in the early stages they were followed by Some Acre, Grattan, and Tenacre. Kali and Nasselle made up ground on the top bend and the leaders into the straight were Kali, Lady Lucerne, Snowshoe, and Grattan. Grattan and Snowshoe fought but the finish, Snowshoe winning by a head. Grattan was two lengths away third, and lady Lucerne, Kali, and Some Acre were next. Snoeshoe stayed on just too well for Nasselle, who, however, did well considering she got away badly, and had to run round the field. FRASER MEMORIAL. In fairly even betting Moutoa Treasury was favourite for the Fraser Memorial Handicap. Lucy Rose made all the running, but Manly moved forward steadily over the last half-mile, and joined Lucy Rose at the home turn. challenged Manly in the straight, but Manly held his lend to win by a neck. Lucy Rose was a length away third, and the others were almost in line close behind Lucy Rose. Manly thoroughly deserved his win, but Lucy Rose was a shade unlucky. Moutoa Treasury failed to stay, and Hipo ran below his New Plymouth form. ’ NGAIO HACK HANDICAP. Of the field of ten which contested the Ngaio Hack Handicap Warfille and Vinella were favourites. Both ran good races, but were beaten. Elysinnor took up the running immediately the field was released, and he led along the back from Warflame, Vinella, Volplape, Warfille, Merxcis, Patearoa, and Skyrider. Skyrider, who had been last in the early stages, moved up fast, and was in behind Elysianor and Warflame approaching the straight and Warfille was next. Elysianor relinquished the lead soon after turning the home corner and Warflame took charge, while Warfille and Vinella came at the leaders. Heads separated the first four as they crossed the line, Warflame just beating Elysianor, with Warfille third and Vinella four. Patearoa. Volplane, Acred, Skyrider, Merxcis and Vauclause followed in the order named. BAILEY HANDICAP.

Limited and Vast Acre led to the straight in the Bailey Handicap, where Nasstori rushed up from the back and

took charge. Dobbin came at Nasstori over the last furlong and won by a head. Limited a length and a half away third and Whenuanui last. RANGITOTO HANDICAP. A late run on Mister Gamp saw him go out a good favourite for the Rangitoto Handicap. Thrift, too, was well backed. Kilburn went very freely in the early stages of the race and led to the straight from Thrift and Royal Black. Mister Gamp was last for half the journey ; he made a fast run round the field ou the top bend, but once heads were turned for home Thrift took charge, eventually winning by half a length from Kilburn, with Balloon a length away third, and Royal Black and Acred next. KILLEYMOON HANDICAP. Money was poured liberally on to Glenstar in the Killeymoon Handicap, and he won almost from end to end. He led into the straight from Vigilance, Borsalene, and Gold Cure, and in the run home more than held his own to win by a length. Gold Cure ran another good race in second place, and Borsalene was only a head away, third. Both Gold Cure and Borsalene covered extra ground. Maui, Discourse, and Callanmore followed the placed horses. FAREWELL HANDICAP.' The meeting ended with the Farewell Hack Handicap, for which Flying Binge and Bank Note were the favourites. Inflame, Orewa, Good Marble, jumping out well, led all the way. Bank Note, always well placed, challenged in the straight, but could make no impression on Inflame, who won by a length and a half, with Second Thought two and a half lengths away, third, and Marcia, Flying Binge, White Ringlet, and Wyeford next. The Riccarton tracks, which were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday as a result of welcome rain were reopened today. The plough was out of commission, and the gallops were confined to the outside of the trial grass, which provided splendid going. There was not much fast work, most of the horses being restricted to serviceable exercise on the sand. Honour and Jaleux covered six furlongs the reverse way at a strong pace. Agrion and Bride were together throughout a steady seven furlong gallop occupying Imin. 35sec. Footfall and Chide were not asked to do their best in covering a mile in Imin. 48 4-ssec. The former is standing up to his work well, and should be in good order for the Easter meeting. Paperchase was seen to advantage in a task over the sme ground covered in Imin. 46see. Thorndale and Nincompoop finished together at the end of seven furlongs run in Imin. 35sec. The former will represent the stable in the Waimate Cup next week, and will be ridden by A. E. Ellis. Impertinence and Sudden Storm sprinted four furlongs along the back in 53sec. Silver Paper reeled off half a mile in the smart time of 49sec. Louise, who will probably make the trip to Wellington, reeled off five furlongs in Imin. 4sec. Cqunt Cavour and Amor executed a useful task over a mile in Imin. 49 3-5 sec. ....

Stately showed her customary ability on the track by recording 48 4-ssec. for a spin from the four-furlong post. Rotor and Countersign accomplished a similar task in 50 3-ssec. The latter is coming to hand satisfactorily after the recent spell. Caterpillar beat Kentish Lady at the conclusion of six furlongs, covered in Imlu. 19sec. Orlflamb (I. Tilson) gave a faultless exhibition in a task over six fences. He is to contest the Hurdle Kace at Wannate on Thursday next. Lancer (I. Tilson) was also responsible for a clever display over a round of the hurdles. The yearling colt by Limond from Waterway, who realised the record price of 2400 guineas at the Trenthain sales, will race under the name of Letes. The purchase of the three-year-old gelding Star Raid, by Night Raid, from Bendown, dam of tlie two-year-old Stealth, has been completed on behalf of a West Australian buyer, Mr. ,T. J. O’Hara, and he was shipped to Wellington to-day, en route to liis new home. Star Raid is an attractive looking gelding, and Ims shown marked pace on the tracks, but has been disappointing in his recent effort in a race. With his ability, however, and the indications he has given of staying on, it would not be surprising to hear of his developing into a high-class performer later in his career. His owner-breeder, Mr. A. F. Roberts, had several chances to sell him as a two-year-old but was not keen on parting with him. It is. therefore, probable that a substantial figure was involved In tempting Mr. Roberts to change his mind. The Limond— Eulogy yearling filly purchased for 1400 guineas by Mr. G. D. Greenwood at the Trenthain sales has had the name of Praise claimed for her. The Riccarton trainer, J. B. Pearson, has secured from Mr. J. F.,Rend, of the Burnside Stud. Oamaru, the lease of a two-year-old filly by Kolloway from Mazurkc. and a filly by Paper Money from Rose lied. The latter was submitted at the Trenthain sales in January, but did not reach the reserve. GOOD GALLOP BY V LIMERICK By Telegraph.—Press Association. (Rec. March 7, 9.5 p.m.) Sydney, March T.
