A visitor to Wellington is Mr. J. Shaw Thompson, proprietor and editor of the “Dolby Herald," and a past-president of the Queensland Country Press Association. Mr. Thompson is a NeW Zealander, and served as a journalist on papers in Timaru, Christchurch, and Gisborne twenty years ago. He left New Zealand for Queensland in 1909, and after trying his fortunes upon the land in that State, he returned to journalism, and acquired an interest in the "Dalby Herald, of which he is now the owner and editor. Dalby is a progressive railway centre m the Darling Downs, about 150 miles on the Western line from Brisbane. Next to Homebush, Sydney, and Flemington, Melbourne, Dalby puts thrdugh mote stock annually than any market in the Commonwealth. Mr. Thompson, who will return to Australia to-day, stated yesterday that 404,000 sheep, and 60,000 cattle were put through the Dalby market last year. He stated that the Darling Downs had a rainfall about equal to that of Canterbury, and had been enjoying favourable seasons for some years. Queensland, under a long Labour rule, was suffering from heavy taxation.
