A large number of hares were seen the other night on the road between Taradale and Puketapu, a motorist encountering no fewer than a dozen in about half a mile (reports an exchange). Others were more scattered, and appeared at odd intervals along the road, while one was passed when almost in Napier, which animal was heading steadily for the city. Hares are capable of an astonishing speed when pursued by a motor vehicle, the lamps of which appear to hold them in their glare like a magnet. Most owners of motor-cycles say that hares are dangerous things to meet on the road. A huge map showing in detail the roads and streets and their levels, tram, bus and railway routes, and all sections, their use, and the nature of buildings, is being prepared by the town-planning department of the Auckland City Council. The area from the Tamaki to the Whan is embraced by the map, which is to be on a scale of five chains to the inch. The preparation of the map, required as a basis for the development of Auckland under the Town Planning Act. has involved a great deni of original work. There will be four sheets in the map, which will be 20ft. by 10ft. when completed towards the end of the year.
