"Overcheck.”)

The meeting of the Waikato Club, at Claudelands on Saturday, was a most successful one, though there was a decrease of £2654 compared with the figures for last March. The track was particularfy fast, and in practically every race horses shattered their handicaps to an extent that would not be appreciated by their owners. Torpedo .Huon, for instance, won the Cup in 4.27 4-ssec„ from a 4.34 mark, while both Gold Dial and Lady Dunmore registered 4.28, The race was robbed of considerable interect by reason of the. fact that Wrackler failed to strike his correct gait when the field was dispatched. In tlie early stages, he lost about 100 yards, but he raced in brilliant style Once he,settled down, to finish a close fifth. Had lie gone away correctly, it appears certain that he would have caused the winner a great deal of bother. Torpedo Huon gave a splendid exhibition, btit he is ndw On a mark that will probably leave him with little to come and go upon. Carmel, a six-year-old gelding by Our Thorfie—Abbess, Carried most support in the Progressive Handicap, and won nicely from Mountain Dell in the smart time of 3.25 3-ssec. This pair really h«d the race to themselves after a furlong had been covered. Entering the straight, they held an advantage of several lengths frotn their nearest opponent, but Regret got up to within five lengths of the second horse at the finish. Form at Otahuhu pointed strongly to Taniahine in the ’ Improvers’ Handicap, and she was made a very solid favoufite, carrying £1442 as against slightly, over £l2OO iriteSted upon the chances of . Don Zolock. Tamahine was never headed and won comfortably by a length and g quarter. Her time was 3.45 2-5, or 4 3-5 better than her handicap. She should win again Boon. The Members' Handicap,. tgo, was robbed of a great deal of interest by reason of the fqet that Etta Cole did not arrive on the course in time to contest the event. This left a number of investors lamenting, as they had been waiting for’ hef as the bet Of the day. The owner was, it is understood, given permission to refrain ffoin scratching her till the horses left the birdcage, a request to leave the mare in utitil starting -time being refused oil the ground that machine investments would have to be returned if the mare did not arrive, in time. Within a minute or two of signing the scratching book Etta Cole made her appearance, but was not able to start. ' ' \ But for a couple of breaks Koro Peter would have been hard to beat in the Members’ Handicap. Approaching the straight he lost a lot of ground through breaking, and he went to a second break when challenging Anseline in the run home, allowing the latter to win by three lengths. Rolfe Audubort tangled at the start of the Raglan Handicap, and While this militated against his chances, it is doubtful whether he could have defeated Cornelian with an even break. The latter commenced very smartly and paced > attractively throughout. "I s ? raced will ,but when fighting it out Cornelian in the straight went; to a break leaving the latter to win by three lengths. Rolfe Audubon was eight, lengths further baclc C f,Xngs covered the journey of sixteen luriongs in 4.35 2-5, thereby bettering her handicap time by 7 3-ss6c. Tnnv Victor put up the smart time of 2.13 Th to -wlnlbe Walpa Handicap from Gold Dial (2.12 4-5) and ftfediisa (—l4 3 o). The former held an advantage a >v lengths at the finish so that driver miaht have saved a second or so had he been so inclined. Still it does not always pay to drive too close a finish. In the concluding event Mountain Dell was made favourite on the showing in the Progressive Handicap, ana she wtw unlucky to be defeated by only half a jength as «ll% lost q s r e s T l ou , 1 e d ’’ B ‘ h o t at the commencement. She should not be long in securing a stake. Ukulele Lady. ' winner of the Fgirball Trotting Handicap at the Marlborough meeting, is said to have given a particularly pleasing display, D. Withers was right on the spot at the Banks Peninsula meeting for be drove the winner if each of the two trotting races on the programme. Logan Princess, who won the Wairewa Handicap beat a large field, registering 3.30 2-5 as against her handicap time of 3.40. She made up her ground very fast and secured a mce position early in the race. M hen called upon for an effttft in the straight she had no difficulty in settling the pretensions of Proud Dillon to win by four lengths. It Is understood that the Forbnry Park Club is to lay flown a grass track. This type of track is certainly much nicer than a dirf one, when it comes to racing on a sry wlntjy and as most of the racing is done on grass, no doubt th® clubs actiyp "will be appreciated by owners ana trainers. Wild Hebe is reported to be doing good work down south. Avenger is having a spell, His form this year has not been up to the mark, and the change may do him a lot of good. Lindbergh is regarded as an early winner In the south. The nominations for the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting are due to-morrow. The programme was reviewed in these columns some time ago, and will warrant a close study by owners. The Cup is worth £6OO. The acceptances for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday are very good, and the racing should be of a high standard. A full review of the form of the horses engaged will appear on the morning of the races. On his Waikato running. . when he was unofficially tlmea to go about 4.29 after a bad start, it will not be surprising to find Wrackler made a good favourite, but there arc a number of useful horses engaged, and the race may take some winning. The pacer Dllnon has been sold by W. Warren to a patron of C. S. Donald s stable, and will in future be trained at Belfast. WYNDHAM ACCEPTANCES By Telegraph.—Press Association. Invercargill, March 6.
