FISHING AT TAUPO

TROUT IN GOOD CONDITION “Fishing at the Delta has been excellent, many anglers expressing great satisfaction with the condition and fighting qualities of the fish,” states the Conservator of Fish and Game at Rotorua, in a report to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle). ' ‘.‘The most deadly flies have been the ‘Silver Doctor,’ ‘Demon.’ and ‘Matuku,’ but other old favourites are all doing some execution. Reports of the catches of ten individual anglers show that one took a 13J-pounder, ,one a 12-pounder. five 10-pounders, one a Ql-pounder, and two 9-pounders. A party from Scotland, who have now joined Sir Harry Lauder at the Bay of Islands, took over 200 fish In a fortnight. Fishing in the Tongariro River is just now only fair owing to the dry weather and very low state of the river. Rain.is urgently needed, and excellent /river fishing should be obtainable after a decent downpour. . “At the Taupo end the launches have had rather a quiet time owing to the windy weather, but at odd times at Whnkaipo and Whangamata Bays and in the Waikato River a fisherman took 30 fish, 'averaging 71b. in five days on the fly. His best fish was a perfect specimen of 111 b. “The new track along the eastern bank of the Waikato River abovejlukn Falls, which has been .further improved by the Department of Internal Affairs, is still very popular, there being twelve rods there at 8 p.m. on February 17 and all getting some sport. The dry-fly vogue on this water is still attracting many devotees of that art so that even that phase of angling ean be included in one’s itinerary during a stay at Taupo. The conditions of all fish is reported to be good. the average weight has crept up a little, now standing at 71b. and individual fish of 121 b. and over .are fairly common. ’
