PUNISHED FOR CRIME
SENTENCES AT DUNEDIN. Bv Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, March 4. The following prisoners were sentenced at the Supreme Court to-day by Mr. Justice MacGregor Pearl Caroline Hislop, for abandoning a baby, was ordered to be detained in a Salvation Army Home for twelve months. In the case of Howard Williams Thomas, for the theft of £206 Is. 6d. from his employer, Henry Schneideman, His Honour said there were special circumstances and ordered prisoner to come up for sentence if called on within the next two years. Doris May Adams, on five charges of breaking, entering and theft, was admitted to probation for two years. It was shown that prisoner was married in August of last year and had a baby three months old. , Some discussion took place on what would happen to the baby if the prisoner, . who had served two previous sentences, were s?nt to gaol. It appeared no. provision was made for such circumstances, and the baby would have to be boarded out. His Honour said he did not like a conviction for arson recorded against prisoner, but Mr.’Hanlon pointed out this had occurred when the girl was only 13 years of age. Frederick Hall, a young man, for forging a cheque of £lO, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. r The Judge said the prisoner was not a first offender. Otherwise he might have treated, the case differently.
