One’ of the engineers who attended the recent Civil Engineers’ 'Conference had a very narrow escape from drowning when a party visited the Christchurch Drainage Board’s sewage farm; The party had -inspected the'septic tanks, and the'engineer apparently was taking a short cut along the to)) of one of the walls; when his foot 1 slipped; and he fell in. Fortunately he was able to seize the parapet of the wall and to hang there, immersed over his knee£ If he had gone under, he would probably have been drowned, as there is a Semi-solid growth of grass and weeds on the surface of the tank to a depth of about three feet.
