WELLINGTON’S AIR SENSE
AERO, CLUB’S APPEAL FOR £4,000
The Wellington Aero Club is making a determined move to raise sufficient capital to begin on the new ground which is being provided for aviation purposes at Miramar. The following circular letter has been sent out by the secretary of the club (Mr. N. McArthur):—
“As you are aware, the Wellington City Council has expended £17,000 in providing and preparing for the use of the city an. aviation ground, and by means of this hopes to create in the citizens of Wellington an -air’sense’ which will have the effect of placing Wellington on the map as an airport. The new grounds have been placed at the disposal of this club, the object of which is to stimulate development of aviation. The club finds it necessary in the first year of its existence to appeal to citizens and local organisations for financial assistance, and feels confident that it can rely upon the civic pride of the citizens of the Capital City to provide all the funds necessary to see it through the first year. After that it is expected that the membership fees will be sufficient to meet current expenses. The estimated amount required for this year is £4OOO, made up as follows: — Cost of hangar, £1350; salary of instructor, £500: salary of ground engineer, £312; cost of two 'planes, £1450; spares and workship equipment, £388; total, £4OOO. In aviation matters Wellington is probably the most backward of the four chief cities, but with the generous assistance of citizens it will be possible to make Wellington’s development as an airport worthy of the Capital City.”
