GORSE FIRE

- NEAR. OIL STORES AND TANKS Some anxiety was felt for a time yesterday morning when it was kiiown that a gorse fire was blazing fiercely in the vicinity of the oil stores at Thorndon. In the stiff northerly breeze the flames spread rapidly up the hill and down into Kaiwiirra Gorge right to the end of the Atlantic Union Oil Company’s depot, it is stated that the outbreak was started by a main line train shortly after 11 o’clock. As soon as the alarm was given the Thorndon Fire Station staff turned out iu full force. They were soon reinforced from the Central Fire Station, and in a few minutes four machines and 17 men were at work tinder the direction of Superintendent J. Creeke. After two hours’ fighting the outbreak was got under control. The fire approached within tt few yaiajs of the oil stores before it was extinguished. Another gorse fire occurred on council property adjoining the Presbyterian manse at Wadestowu, where about two acres of gorse were burned out. The Wadestown Brigade was assisted by men relieved from the other fire when it was brought under control.
