PRICES FIRM

WANGANUI WOOL SALE SATISFACTORY CONCLUSION By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, February 28. The wool sale ended to-day with prices firm on Auckland rates. The official range of prices is as follows:—

DROP ON PREVIOUS SALE TRICES ON PAR WITH AUCKLAND. Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, February 28. The offering showed quality on a par with that usually catalogued at February sales, much of it from the back country showing signs of seed and being matted. Bidding,' while not spirited, was steady, and. taking the class of wool into account, the sale must be considered satisfactory. Prices were roughly Id. to Id. down on the last Wanganui sale, but so far as the blddiug went last night were equal to the range set at Auckland. At the start passings were frequent, this creating the assumption that reserves were too high. “The sale must be considered' satisfactory,” an auctioneer told a reporter. “In some cases in my catalogue prices were slightly in sellers’ favour compared with Auckland, but a great many clips were spoiled through not being skirted and the bellies being left on. This Is to be regretted as buyers from some countries, notably America, are precluded from bidding for unskirted wool. If the American market is to be catered for farmers must skirt heavily and get their clips up a bit. The American with a high duty on wool cannot afford to pay for dirt.” He went on to say that at the price level set alt this sale wool was profitable to the grower, and it it were stabilised at that the farmers would have little to complain about. Tlie bulk of the offering suited the Bradford topmakers and they and Germany were tlie greatset buyers. France was in the market for some of the better class wools of fine lialfbrcd quality and America sought the bright well-skirted 48 to 50 counts. For pieces the Continent',was the most prominent bidder and most of the lambs’ wool was bought for mills there. Wool was made on account of Bradford.

BROKERS’ REPORTS MURRAY ROBERTS. Messrs. Murray Roberts report as follow:—The third Wanganui sale which commenced last night continued this morning. The attendance of buyers was very large and representatives of all sections of the trade. Competition was seldom keen, but was steadily maintained throughout the sale. Continental buyers were active on all wools which suited them and Bradford consistently bid on fleece wool. Lambs’ wool was exceedingly erratic, some lots making really good figures while other lines were somewhat neglected. Pieces and bellies were in good request and realised satisfactory prices compared with recent sales. The .market remains steady at the level of values current, at Wellington and Auckland. Growers mostly were willing to meet the market and fairly good clearances were made with Japan out of the market. Southdown wool receded considerably and wool of this sort recently selling lit extreme figures was lower by 3d. to 4d. per lb. The clips reclassed by the company were keenly sought after. and realised particularly good prices on the day. Speaking generally, all crossbreds were firm on late rates. Down and halfbred wool was 1n buyers' favour. Competition was keen on some lines of lambs' wortl. one lot In our, catalogue. Considering the drop In the market since last sale In Wanganui, there was quite a satisfactory clearance, and we disposed of 00 per eent. of our catalogue. Growers had time to become reconciled to tlie slide in values which had been going on since the Waiiganul sale on January 23, and were disposed to meet the market. The Auckland sale was reported flrm on Wellington, and we can quote similarly here. There was the usual full bench of buyers and competition was general and keen from ail sections at tlie lower level of prices. The offering, as is usual at this time of the year, contained a large proportion of Inferior wools, and the Continent competed for those with plenty of animation nt current rates. There were practically no American wools offered, ns they are usually shorn early, and lhe January sale cleared tliexn all out at satisfactory prices. Average wools of Bradford style met with strong competition, and it Was noticeable that any Hues nicely got up and skirted sold well Lambs of good quality sold much better than was expected. France being a good buyer. Altogether tlie sale wns Unite a satisnftocry one. being ns good ns was expected, considering recent reports from other centres, and it looks as though the downward tendency has been stemmed. It was nlso pleasing to note tlie bulk of the purchasing of the fleece wool was made on account of Bradford. As compared witli tlie sale here on January 23, tlie following are tlie changes downward in detail:—Extra flue crossbred. 48-50; Super. 2Jd. to 3Jd. down: average. WRIGHT, STEPHENSON AND COMPANY. Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., L(d,, in conjunction with Newton King, Ltd., report as follows:—On Wednesday night we offered a catalogue of 5510 bales, out of the total of 25,000 bales. As usual at this time of tlie year very few really good lots were offering, most of the catalogue coining from the back country and seedy wool being consequently prominent. A full bench of buyers competed very keenly right through the sale for practically ail sorts. Prices, though easier than at the January sale, when compared With recent sales -in other centres, must be quoted very firm, and in sellers’ favour, the only exception being Southdown wool and ordinary lambs’ wool, which wear easier. Super quality lambs’ wool, however. brought exceptionally good prices, 21jd. being realised for Southdown crossbred lambs' wool and 183 d. for good Romney lambs' wool. Seed naturally affected the price of all lambs’ wool from the back country. We have again to call attention to the good realisations for our binned and interlotted' wool, especially the latter, which met with the keenest competition right throughout the sale. The practice of interlotting does away with star lots—we did not have one star lot in the whole of our catalogue to offer. A big proportion of our catalogue was suitable for the Continent, whose buyers were bidding freely, with Bradford well up on lots suited to their trade. W« effected a really good elearauee (90 per cent.) of our catalogue under the hammer, this being due, no doubt, to the prices bejng better on the whole than was anticipated by the growers. The majority of the passed-in lots were lambs' wool for which the demand has certainly gone off a little. Summed up. we may state that wool is still a good price, and that quite a few of the growers were agreeable surprised at the realisations of the sale. Abraham and Williams, Ltd.! report having yarded a good entry of sheep at the Huntervllle sale on Tuesday last. Prices were slightly easier than previous sales, but most of the yarding changed hands. Tbe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., report as follows: — Our catalogue comprised 360!) bales, and we were successful in disposing of 95 per cent, under the hammer. There was a full bench of buyers representing the Upited Kingdom, America, the Continent, Japan, as well as Dominion mills, and local follmongers and scourers. At the commencement of the sale bidding was inclined to drag, and very little animation was in (evidence, but as the sale progressed competition became much keener, and at times when super lots were offered, spirited, and we are pleased to that our sale exceeded our most sanguine expccta-' tions. Comparing prices witlu those ruling at Auckland, tlley were quite firm, and in several instances in sellers’ favour, and If compared witli those ruling at the previous sale In Wanganui on January 23. they can be quoted from a halfpenny to a penny easier. The wool opened up pretty much on a pnr with the usual February offerings at tliis centre, tlie clips coming mainly from back country stations, Taihape and Wanganui districts, most of them being late shorn and consequently carrying more condition than the earlier shorn clips. However, Included in our catalogue were several very nice clips and these under keen competition realised excellent prices. Nine bales halflired branded PMD making 193(1., 12 bales halfbred branded C/Tanglwal made 19d„ 17 bales dingy of the same brand making 171 d., 4 bales Corriedale branded St. Andrews 17jd., and 5 bales Corrledale lambs 20jd., 6 bales lambs branded GT over bar 193 d.. Q bales lambs branded Tullochgorntn 193(1., and quite n number of other lots making from 17d. to l"3d. Quite a lot of the lambs included in the sale unfortunately contained a large percentage of seed, which militated against them realising high prices. Nevertheless these sold extremely well. As the bulk of the wool on offer was mostly top-making sorts the main competition came from Bradford mid German buyers. but whenever bright, wellconditioned mid swlrted clips came under tlie hammer Bradford and Dominion mills Competed eagerly. For lambs' wool the Continent were the principal buyers, as also for bellies and pieces. The sale must be considered most satisfactory mid we are euro growers will be pleased with the results.
