A large number of the staff assembled at the General Post Office last week to bid farewell to Mr. J. M. McLean, principal of the telegraph division of the head office, who has recently been promoted to the position of Chief Postmaster, Wanganui. Presenting Mr. McLean with a rug and reading lamp, Mr. G. McNamara, the Secretary, referred to the long association of Mr. McLean

with the work of the General Post Office, and voiced the general regret at his departure. Mr. A. Gibbs, Chief Telegraph Engineer, also spoke. Mr. McLean entered the Post and Telegraph Department 37 years ago, as a member of the staff of the Wellington Telegraph Office. For the past 15 years he has been a member of the General Post Office staff, gradually rising to the position of principal of the telegraph division. He will take up his new position at Wanganui immediately, sue-| ceeding Mr. IL O. Bree, who has retired on superannuation.
