PALMERSTON WATER

COUNCILLOR ELIOTT’S MOTION ARTESIAN SUPPLY TO BE INVESTIGATED Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 18. At to-night’s meeting of the Palmerston North Borough Council, Councillor. M. A. Eliott moved his motion that. £365,000 be raised on loan for improvement in piping water from Tiritea. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. Councillor Mansford moved that an opinion should be obtained from competent engineers as to the cost of artesian wells in the borough to augment the supply, also that samples of artesian water should be analysed to discover its effects on health and on pipes or hot-water systems. He could not get to the bottom of the fact that the railway did not use artesian water. A prominent medical man in the town had artesian water in use, so there was evidently no danger of goitre. He also cited instances of other towns using artesian water to boost gravitation supply. Councillor Tremaine seconded the motion. Councillor Milverton suggested that a well. near the river would ensure soft water in large supply. This would be filtered and pumping would be required. Anyway, he. had doubts as to the cost of pumping. Councillor Hodgens was of opinion that a tank at Terrace End would help the position. The motion was carried by five votes to four. USE OF HOSES. Councillor Hodgius asked if residents could use their hoses, to which the Mayor replied in -the affirmative, but said he did not want to advertise it. Residents could use their hoses,, but he was looking to residents to use as little wafer as they could
