IMPROVED FIGURES FOR JANUARY INCREASE IN IMPORTS AND EXPORTS (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, February 12. British overseas trade started the New Year with a big spurt. The figures for January, given in the Board of Trade returns, are higher both for imports and exports than for many months past. The imports are valued at £116,000.000, showing an increase of £14.500,000 compared with December. and of £15.500.000 compared with the, previous January. The exports are' £6.500,000 above those of December. at a total of nearly £67.000,000. The increase compared with January. 1928, is £7,000,000. January’s total of exports has been exceeded only once during the past two years, namely, in November. 1927. Of the increase compared with the previous January no less a sum than £5,500.000 is accounted for by articles wholly or mainly manufactured. The outstanding, increases under this heading are vehicles, including locomotives, ships, and aircraft, £1.623.000: iron and steel and manufactures thereof. £1,103.000: cotton yarns and manufactures, £612,900.
