CULLING OF DEER HERDS “During the last five years,” said Mr. C. I. Dasent, secretary of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, ”we have culled between 15,000 and 16,000 deer from the herds in the Wellington district, and, as the result the heads taken are improving every year.”
From the same source it is learned that the society is still expending about £lOO in ammunition for supply to farmers who undertake to cull on those lands which are overstocked with red deer. Between June 1, 1927, and May 31, last year, 4051 deer were culled in Haurangi and the Wairarapa. The old Whaterangi station, in the Wairarapa. was probably the last overstocked stronghold of the deer, but since that property has been cut up into four stations, the occupiers- have taken up the extermination of the overplus, anfl matters are now fairly normal, whilst the heads taken are improving steadily.
