YOUTH ANSWERS SERIOUS CHARGE
INCIDENT ’AT CARTERTON

Masterton, February 8. Following an incident at Carterton last night, Owen Llewellyn Udy, aged 18 years, residing in Hilton Road, Carterton, appeared in answer to a serious charge in the Magistrate’s Court this morning: that of doing bodily harm to Albert John L’dy, aged 60 years, by wounding him in the stomach with a knife. Accused was remanded to appear at Masterton on February 16. He was released on bail on one surety of £2OO and self £2OO. The incident leading up to the charge occurred at the injured man’s residence about seven o’clock last night, Udy being admitted to the Masterton Hospital shortly after suffering from a serious wound in the stomach. The hospital authorities stated this afternoh that his condition was critical. When the accused came before the
Court this morning, proceedings were adjourned until noon, and were resumed at the Masterton Hospital, where the depositions of the injured man
were taken. When examined, he stated that he had visited Carterton yester- • day afternoon and had returned home about 5 p.m. He had heard no words between his wife and his son,-he said, and when questioned as to his injury he stated that it had been caused by an accident, he having slipped on the back doorstep and fallen on a knife. He also stated that he was quite gootl friends with his son Owen, who was a well-behaved boy. He had not seen Owen with a knife; and he had had no words with him about that time. He had not struck Owen. He denied having had liquor that afternoon.
