THE RACING WORLD

FINAL DAY OF THAMES MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Acceptances for the first day of the Wellington Racine Club’s summer meeting to be held on January 22, 24, and 20, will close to-night at 9 o'clock.

Nominations for the autumn meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club, to be held on Thursday and Saturday, February 7 and 9, will close at 9 p.m. on I>rldaj, when forfeit (1 sov.) is also due for the fifteenth Taranaki Stakes.

Rotowhero injured a fetlock at. Trent ham yesterday morning, and it was found necessary to destroy him. Rotowhero was :ififour-year-ol(l gelding by Gasbag f u' iu Sartovna, owned by the Hon. T. M. Wil ford and trained by J. Ayres He first came into prominence by Winningthie I nin Maiden Plate at his first start at the Otaki spring meeting in 1927, and pajiiig a thumping dividend. His form since then lias proved moderate, but he won ~ three more races last season, and was heteriil times placed, and on New Tear s Day at Tauherenikau he again entered the ning list, also running second in another start on the same day. While not good class, Rotowhero was a useful Belding, and his loss is distinctly bad luck for Mr. Wilford.

Silver Paper galloped very well over five furlongs at Riecarton on Saturday morning, registering Imin. 1 *.-ssec. on the plough, with a good weight up. Chil^ a " play was responsible for the same time earlier, but according to the critics Silver Paper’s performance was the more impressive.

All Christchurch is talking of Hoylakes mile in Imin. 40 1-Ssec. at Riecartonon Saturday morning. Despite the fact that he had a light-weight up, the gallop is said to have been exceptional.

Asniring put up a brilliant gallop at RUcarton S on Saturday. To run 49 2-ssec on the plough, and the last three in So 3-ssec is exceptionally good. Aspiring has only 6.12 to carry in the Wellington Stakes.

H Young, who has been for some considerable time in Queensland is recorded by Christchurch papers as riding work at Riecarton at present. He was on Childsplay on Saturday morning.

Southland reports state that a Sydney trip at Easter is on the cards for Celerity II and Spean Bridge.

Beacon Light goes home to Invercargill after the Wellington meeting. According to a Southland writer, the boniform gelding may be' tried in the south as a jumper. L. Wilson will probably bring Bernera and the two-year-olds Gay Virginia and Mv Own to Trentham. The last-named Is a full-sister to Raasay, and lias not been in training very long, but Is reported smart. Later In the season she should do are appearing in several P a r ta to the effect that Martarma is the only horse left to carry on the Martian line. Thia is incorrect. Warplane is a notable Martian horse whose stock have been doing very well lately, one of his sons, Rea Heckle, winning the Great Northern Derby. Raceful is another Martian horse whose services are available in the north.

The Foxton Racing Club’s annual meeting will open to-morrow, and conclude on Thursday. The course is at present in first-class order, and given , fine weather the meeting should be very successful. An attraction in the Cup field this year is the New Zealand Derby winner, Nightmarch, and another well-performed three-year-old, - Toxeuma, will also be. a runner.

When Historic, Nightmarch and Teri finished with noses between them at Awapunl last month, Nlghtmarcb carriec! S.o and Teri 7.6. In the Foxton Cup Nightmarch has 9.0 and Teri 7.13, a difference of 21b. in favour of Teri, but 9.0 is a good weight for a three-ycar-old over ten furlongs.

Footpad, who won nt Thames yesterday, is one of J. T. Jamieson’s team engaged at Trentham. This was Footpad s first success. As previously mentioned be is a three-year-old brother to Panther.

Le Choucas sustained a fall at the Takapuna spring meeting at the end of November, and he did not race up to expectations at Ellerslie, where also a late arrival on the course may . have affected hfs chance. He appears to have run two fair races at Thames this week-end, and he might be on the improve. He is engaged at Trentham. A feature of recent meetings has been the large number of nominations received and the I’aliiatua Racing Club’s list tor its annual meeting at the end of the month is no exception. The nominations exceed last year’s total by 100, and are a record. No fewer than 21 nominations have been received for the principal event, the Pahintua Cup. The course, it is stated, was never in better order, and the membership of the club is steadily increasing. Paganelli, who is entered for the Wellington summer meeting, has also been nominated for the principal sprint events at Takapuna, which meeting opens on the concluding day of the Wellington fixture. Te Aroha reports state that King Lu was not at all benefited by ills two races nt Ellerslie. He is back again on tlic tracks with a view to competing at the Tm Aroha meeting, but in the work allotted him moves short. Queen Arch is carrying more condition than usual, but her work is quite satisfactory. She comes to hand quickly, and may be ready next month for middle distance events. Toxeuma, Millais nnd First Line were booked to leave Hastings yesterday for Foxton, where the two former/have engagements at tho meeting. First .Line is not in at Foxton, but is engaged at Wellington. Toxeuma and Millais are .also in at Wellington, and after completing their tasks at Foxtou will, with First Line, journey on to Trentham. There is apparently an Australian as well as a New Zealand Gold Tinge, one of that name being an acceptor for the Sefton Handicap at Warwick Farm last month.

Although the totalisator figures showed a decline of over .£29,006 for the recent meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club, it is reported that there was a profit on the fixture.

Atereria has disappointed of late, but is now working well at Awapuni, and is expected to do well at Foxton.

Discourse sprang into prominence at the Foxton meeting last year, winning the Novice Stakes and Awahou Hack Handicap on the first day, and the Ranglotu Hack Handicap on the second. L. G. Morris rode the daughter of Gasbag in all three races, and it was mainly owing to his vigorous horsemanship that she beat Saudburr by a bead In the last-named event.

At the Otaki meeting held in the last week of November, Joy Bird won in her oniv start under the substantial impost of 9.6. How Joy Bird got into a poor class handicap at 7.7 at a small meeting held outside Sydney recently is hard to understand. Her long starting price is even more remarkable, and for a small outlay the connections of Joy Bird could have won a tidy sum. That a mistake had been made in the mare’s handicap was revealed by a rise of 261 b. for her next engagement.

Australian writers are looking forward with interest to Sir. G. D. Greenwood’s two-vear-old Limond colt Honour, winner of the A.R.C. Royal Stakes, fulfilling his engagements in the A.J.C. Sires' Produce and Champagne Stakes at Easter time. They are anxious to see how he shapes against the Commonwealth’s best of the age.

The ex-Rlccarton horseman O. Cullum had the winning mount on Mr. E. J. Watt’s gelding Praetor in the hurdle race at the recent A.J.C. summer meeting. The same combination won the hurdle race at Tattersail’s Annual Meeting three days later.

Twink and Kilmlss, who created a mild surprise by finishing first and second respectively in last year’s Foxton Cup, are engaged again this time, and other winners last year that have been paid up for again include Discourse, Lin Arlington, Helotis, Wilderness, and White Ringlet.

According to an Adelaide message appearing in a Sydney exchange, James Seoble, the veteran Melbourne racehorse trainer, who will be 69 years old on July 18, is likely to retire then. "I have had a long association with the turf, and feel I have done my part in the training of horses. I would not like to give up the business altogether, but to keep on as I have been doing for many years would be too arduous for me,” said Scobie. Scobie has had a phenomenally successful career as a trainer. He has saddled the winners of four Melbourne Cups, seven Victoria Derbies, four Australian Cups, three Moonee Valley Cups, six Williamstown Cups, live Adelaide Cups, four A.J.C. Derbies, three A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, three A.J.C. St. Legers, and six V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, while the Maribyrnong Plate (five times), Oaks Stakes (four), Ascot Vale Stakes (12), V.R.C. St. Leger, Grand National Hurdle and Steeplechase, Caulfield Guineas (four), Caulfield Cup, Oaklclgh Plate, South Australian Derby (live), and Hobart Cup (four times), are included in his many notable triumphs.

Jcmldar’s win in the Perth Cup on New Year’s Day is described thus:—He carried 7.0, was second favourite, ran the distance in the State record time of 3mln. 251 sec., and beat twenty-one others, including the New Zealanders Spoony, and Second Wind. After racing behind Wolverton, Spoony, Quanza, and Moncrest until about five furlongs to go, Ductile took charge, and from the two-furlong post was attended by Jemidar and Excceder, well clear of Coolali, Arlmond, and Arapunl. A furlong from home Jemidar took charge, to win by two lengths from Ductile, with a neck between second and tliird (Exceedcr). Arapuni was fourth and Hint fifth. The favourite, Crystal Stream, was bumped going out of tlie straight, and put out of the running. Second Wind also met witli interference at a vital stage. Spoony and Karagan fell, and Spoony was later destroyed. Second Wind finished fifth last, and Crystal Stream third last.

According to the opinions expressed by London critics, the Aga Khan claimed the best two-year-old that performed in England last year in Costaki Pasha, and that colt will, it is stated, probably stand out as the winter favourite for the Derby. The race that gave Costaki Pasha the leading position among tlie juvenile division was the Middle Park Stakes at Doncaster, which he is credited with winning in good style. Costaki Pasha, who was bred by his owner, is said to be a colt of true masculine physique, and he’is by Gainsborough (son of Bayardo) from Cos, a daughter of Flying Orb (son of Orby). For several years the Indian nobleman hns expended lavish sums in the purchase of yearlings in the hope of securing a horse equal to winning the Derby, but so far he has not been placed in the happy position of leading in the winner of the classic race at Epsom. Should Costaki Pasha win this year’s Derby the victory will not be out of its turn for the Aga Khan. Major McCalrnont Is credited with the ownership of a good colt named Mr. Jinks (by Tctratema —False Piety), who won the Hurst Park Two-year-old Stakes in November. Mr. Jinks, who is of the grey shade in colour, is stated to be a colt in every way fitted to aspire to Derby honours. Fillies that scored attractively at two years old are Arabella (by Buchan —Polly Flinders) and Tiffin (by Tetratema —Dawn-wind), but doubts are expressed as to either developing stamina.

AWAPUNI TRAINING NOTES YESTERDAY’S WORK Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 14. Light plough and pace work was tlie order of the day at Awapuni this morning, when training conditions could not have been bettered. All the Wellington, Foxton, and Ashburst entrants were lint through their paces, but none of them did any other than light work. Miss Field is entered at Asliliurst. but is being rested, and will most likely be scratched. Nightn:ar<‘h will bo R. Reed's mount at Foxton. T. Green will be up ou Mister Gamp, Toxeuma, and Liu Arlington. G. Now is' getting good work from three promising two-year-olds in Tigrano (Grand Court—Tigyrita), Coon Song (Hunting Song—Sang Froid), and Robbie’s Mistake (Psychology—Lovelock), WHISKY WARNING. When ordering Bell’s Whisky—the brand which has been on the market for thirty years—be certain that yon are supplied with Scotch whisky from Arthur Bell and Sons, Ltd., Perth, Scot- ‘ land, and take no other. The totals for the meetings were £.33.148 10s. and £35,506, an increase of £23u7 10s. on last year.

Discussing Rconui’s recent win in the Villiers Stakes, a Sydney "Referee” writer went astray in regard to the breeding of Sonra, dam of Reonui, as the following paragraph will show: —“Sopra is a finelybred mare. She was bred by Mr. H. C. White in 1901, and is by the great sire, Positano' (whose son, Poseidon, won the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in one year, and took the Caulfield Cup again in the following year) from Soprano, by Golusborough from Melody, by lhe Barb. Goldsborough was by Fireworks. Soprano, it will be seen, was a sister to the. great racehorse, Melos, who won many important races, despite the fact that he was often called upon to meet such giants ot the turf as Carbine. Abereorn and Lochiel. Sopra was bred by the lute Mr. J. Grigg, of Longbeaeh, in 1916, and is by Ampellon, from Trebelli IL, by Thrush. She is now tho property of Mr. J. Cracroft M ilson, who has a two-year-old half-brother to Reonui by Thurnham, in training at Riecartou under the care of F. D. Jones. Another Sopra appears in the Australian Stud Book and this fact probably led to tho mistake quoted. A Scottish commercial traveller frequently made the trip between London and Paris. He was such a wretched sailor that even on the calmest of days ho felt very ill. At last he went to the skipper of one of the Channel boats t and after explaining his plight, said: “You must know of a cure for seasickness.” "Sure,” said the skipper; “I'll cure you.” And he did. He made the Scottie hold a shilling between his teeth.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES SATURDAY’S GALLOPS Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, January 14. The fast gallop registered by Childsplay on Saturday would point to her prospects in the Weloured by not having to carry any penalty. Up to the present a rider has not been engaged for her. Although carrying a much lighter weight, than Childsplay, Silver Paper’s effort tills morning in time equal to that registered by the Chdkebore filly, served to show up the Paper Money gelding in a favourable light, and his trip to Wellington looks likely to be profitable. He is at present one of the favourites for the Telegraph Handicap and at the reasonable Impost of 7.12 his chances must be seriously considered. Rapier has not done any fast work since the holidays, but he is well advanced in the matter of racing condition, as a result of consistent steady work, and he will not require much to wind him up. He will -lie raced on the second and third days of i the Wellington meeting, but his tasks will

be confined to short distance events. Greyfinch will probably accompany Rapier to Trentham. ~ The Chokebore two-year-old colt Semper Paratus (Winning Hit—Equipment), who has been given every opportunity to furnish before being meed, lias been galloping in an encouraging manner lately at Riecarton, and there is no doubt he possesses the family speed. He will make his first public appearance- at the wellington meeting. Hovlake’s gallop on Saturday was one ‘of the fastest recorded over a mile journey . for some time, and showed that the Auckland trip, if anything, benefited him. He had e\ery excuse for his defeats at Ellerslie, and if he strikes a firm track at Trentham he will make amends for those failures. It was stated in racing circles during the past week that Aussie was to be sent to the Dunedin meeting to tackle Limerick in the Hazlett Memorial Plate, but such lias been denied by Aussie’s owner, Mr. G. Paul, who said the matter had never been considered. Winsome Boy lias been turned out at W. J. Tomkinson’s property for a few weeks’ spell on the grass, prior to being placed In serious work.
