BYRD EXPEDITION

IN BAD SNOWSTORM VESSEL NEARLY TORN FROM ANCHORAGE (By Russell Owen —Wireless to “New York Times.”) Aboard the City of New York. The expedition is amid a bad snowstorm. -It was with much difficulty that the'ship was prevented from being blown away from the icefield to which it was secured with ' anchors. The men ashore are safe and snug in tents,, but it is feared that the walls of the house which was only halferected will be blown down during the storm. Visibility is almost nothing. At 4 o’clock this morning, when the storm approached, the dog teams were unharnessed and everybody told to take much-needed rest until the storm was over, so they are in tents inside their reindeer sleeping bags. A temporary kitchen has been set up, consisting of canvas and food boxes. The Eleanor Bolling’s departure from New Zealand has been delayed for at least two days. Mr. Brophy is in charge there. The expedition truly has reason to be thankful for the excellent equipment he has secured. Dunedin, January 13. Just as the last piece of the gear of the Fokker aeroplane wing was being swung aboard the Eleanor Bolling at 10 on Sunday morning, a defect in the gooseneck casting of the forward derrick was discovered. Repairs are difficult on Sunday, but by working all night on the new forging the Eleanor Bolling expects to sail about 2 o’clock on Monday afternoon. Commander Byrd reports that Owen has had influenza.
